The Art at Strut program has been exhibiting the work of local and international gay or queer artists every month since Magnet was founded in 2003, and has always been an important part of Magnet. We are excited to announce that for the month of May 2019 we are exhibiting the work of Cheyne Gallarde in his show titled “Comic Book Queeroes.”

Inspired by the Golden and Silver Age comics of Marvel and DC, Cheyne Gallarde reimagines drag queens as superheroes and villains. With their amazing transformations and over-the-top personas, drag queens are the modern-day superheroes that the world needs today. Cheyne’s work is nostalgic, celebrating the sentimental look and grit of vintage comics while putting a modern twist on it.

Cheyne Gallarde is a multi-faceted artist born and raised in Hawaii. Prior to illustration, Cheyne was an award-winning fashion photographer and also a drag queen himself. Cheyne’s illustration work is quintessential pop art, combining pop culture icons and his love of comics from the Golden Age. Recently, Cheyne won a Pele Advertising Award for his illustrations of LGBTQ icons for LOGOTV. Prior to that, he was hired by Condé Nast to create the key visual and branding for their QUEEROES Awards show and with VH1 to create comic covers celebrating queer icon John Waters. When not drawing or painting, Cheyne loves to unwind with video games, binge-watch trashy reality TV and play with his dog Rocket.

The Art Opening runs 8–10 PM. Free drinks and light snacks will be provided. If you have any questions, please contact our Community Events Organizer Baruch Porras Hernandez at [masked].
