Booze and Books Monthly Meetup

August's book is King Solomon's Mines, by H Rider Haggard. The library has a few copies (14, plus large print etc). Here's the Goodreads summary. It is rollicking good yarn, but very politically incorrect.

The general theme is: a book set in Africa. Others that spring to mind are Out Of Africa by Karen Blixen, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela, the When The Lion Feeds series by Wilbur Smith.

Another enjoyable meetup. Smaller group because of the weather but great conversation and enjoyable company. Nice food and service as usual. Good to see everyone.

Cold and wet and also haven't read much of the book. Hopefully by end of next month the weather will be more conducive to nighttime adventures. Have a good evening.

Hi gang. I got the book from the library and love it. Really like the modern style of dialogue. Can't make it this month though as I have Bob Dylan tickets on that night . Cheers

    Hi Danielle,
I have just read it again. THe prose is beautiful and the book is astounding for a first time novelist.
I look forward to meeting a few book lovers, I love reading.

My favourite book this year is "Burial Rites",
Just finished Tim Winton's 'Eyrie" what do others think of these Australian offerings?
Am re-reading the No 1 Detectives story" series, and read such a variety of books but don't know anyone else who does.

What is next on your agenda?

I have read Breath by Tim Winton how was Eyrie and I have read No 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. I have also read Henning Mankel (Swedish writer) books on Africa.

I read Burial Rites earlier in the year. It is one of those books that you continue to think about after you've finished it. Quite an outstanding read especially given that the story is inspired by fact.
