Hi Everyone

It has been a while since I have written so this is going to take a while.

I would like to welcome all our new members to the group. We are continuing to grow and now sit at 184 members with around 80% of members logging on regularly. This far exceeds my expectations.

As we have now been going 6 months it is time to assess. I have produced a very short survey that I would like filled in. It is only a couple of questions and is anonymous.  Please take the time to fill it in. This will help me with the direction of the group.

You may have noticed a sudden increase in events posted this week. I have been made redundant at work and find myself with a lot more time on my hands.

Most events are open to the public and will not require a host. If you are nervous about attending on your own, just send me an email or text and I will make sure someone finds you on the day.

I am not going to go through all the events. You can visit our meetup group to see the full program, but I will give a few details of some of our big events.

Fri August 17th 6.30pm at the State Library Level 2. This will be the second round of heats for the State Championship. The first heat was great fun. This is a free event.

Wed August 22nd 6pm at Riverbend Books, Bulimba. More than Fifty Shades of Grey is a look at the phonemenom of this book. A panel of writers and academics will discuss what the fuss is all about including why it has become a hit. This is a free event but bookings are essential. Check out the event for details.

Sat August 25th at 12.30pm at Bovine Restaurant (The Normanby).  Ladies and Gentlemen who lunch is a charity event supporting the Mimiki Foundation. This is a local charity helping at risk youth and runs its own food van. This will be a great day for networking, having fun and supporting a worthy charity. Check out the event for details.

Fri August 31st 6pm at New Farm Library meeting room, is our monthly meet. This month is a little different as it is a recap. I will be taking you on a short journey through the books we have read over the last 6 months. I really need your surveys to collect the best data or it is going to be quite boring. There will be eats and drinks provided as well as prizes. Check out the event for details.

Don’t be disheartened by the fact that attendance numbers are small. It is better this way as we can enjoy each others company. It isn’t a popularity contest. We are a bookclub not a social group. Quality over quantity.

This is a bit of a hot topic around meet up at the moment. We fall in to our own category when it comes to events and venues. I am trying to keep this meetup as free as possible for our members. You are under no obligation to go to events. There is no penalty for not turning up and you won’t be cast out if you never show your face. It does cost money to run a meetup but it is only about $150 per year.

All public events are free unless specified by the venue. The money is to be paid directly to the venue.

For theatre events we will try get discounted tickets. I would require prepayment for these events or you can purchase your own tickets. For tickets purchased by me I would then send your ticket to you. You are then responsible for your ticket. If you can’t go I will do my best to help on sell the ticket for you. By you having your own ticket if something unexpected happens ie I am late, at least you have your ticket and can attend. Otherwise everyone can purchase their own tickets and we can meet before and/or after like we do with the movies.

I didn’t worry about it this month but I will ask a gold coin donation at our monthly meetups. This is a donation. If you don’t want to pay you don’t have to. Any excess monies will go to gifts for guest speakers. I have made our financial situation public in the group, so there is complete transparency in this matter.

I would prefer to keep our current venue of Jojo’s (except for this month) and have everyone responsible for their own food and drinks. Many places now require a deposit for tables of more than ten people and Jojo’s doesn’t.

Some have suggested that I organise food and drinks. This is when it starts to get complicated. I would require pre-payment , as it can be hundreds of dollars to book catering for events even for small groups. Then people don’t turn up, don’t like what’s on offer, I have to chase money, people want refunds etc. So no is the answer. So I hope that answers that.

Book crawls will be $5 each but you will receive much more than $5 in value and will be payable on the day. Hopefully the first one will be up and running soon. I am just waiting a little bit til my life calms down.

I am always open to suggestions if you have ideas of what we should do. There have been some great responses already to the survey and I encourage you all to have your say. After all it is anonymous.

If anyone has something to offer the group, or know of someone and would like to be a special guest to talk about a literary topic this would be fantastic. We can’t pay you but I have arranged some great gifts for our guest speakers. So if you are a writer, librarian, student or self-confessed expert we would love to share your passion. I can arrange a free venue with eats and drinks. We desperately need more workshops. They don’t have to be a longwinded affair but you just might have a wonderful talent to share with us all.

Look forward to catching up soon.
