Re: [BFPG] April BFPG meetup

Hey all,

So this is the stance that I've had on it for quite a while, it's probably worth reiterating just to help with the discussion.

In my experience as an organiser, one of the key things I noticed was that to keep attendance up the venue had to be easy to get to and easy to get home from. When we moved the meetup from Toowong into the city, the difference in attendance was noticeable. Having the meetup further away from central locations for public transport is off-putting to many.

The Edge isn't that far from the city, agreed. But you're away from some major points of transport which puts people off when they're trying to get home at the end of the night. In the city, all buses, trains, and ferries are easy to get to in a short period of time. Also, a large number of people already work in the city, so the effort required to get there is also minimal. Asking people to cross the city to get to somewhere like the Edge if they live in the opposite direction makes them feel that it's not worth it.

You can argue "well if they don't like it, then they don't have to come", but the goal of the group is to build a community around the ideas of functional programming and I think it's in the best interest of the group to make it as easy as possible for all to attend.

So in short, I really feel the meetup should stay in the city if possible. Don't underestimate the impact the venue can have on attendance.

Over and out :)
OJ

Hey Guys,

Last time I checked, which admittedly was 12 months+ ago, the space was free to use, unless you require drinks / catering.

If drinks required, they impose their own (paid) bouncers.

Otherwise, I think we should be ok...

It's an awesome space - well worth investigating further.

It's been one we've considered, Matt would be able to comment more. I believe it costs money and there are other restrictions.

What about the Edge? I went to the Brisbane Web Designer Meetup there last night, and the auditorium is plenty big.

Hi all,

We're still looking for a larger venue, so we're extremely grateful to Katie and Red Hat for offering to host us again this month. Check out the meetup page for the great talks we have lined up:

However, at the request of our hosts, we've reduced the number of places to 40, and in fact, we've already reached that limit. If you're like me, and you want to attend, but didn't get your RSVP in early enough, please add yourself to the waiting list. There will inevitably be people who can't make it after all, so there's a good chance you'll be bumped up the list.

Also, if you have RSVP'd yes, but find you can't make it, please change your RSVP accordingly!

Thanks for your co-operation!
Matt

PS - If you can offer us a larger venue, please get it touch ASAP!
