Video Game Club – Game of the Month: Orwell

The Video Game Club is a monthly get-together in which we meet up over a few drinks to talk about video games. Each month we schedule a game of the month, an indie title available on Steam for both PC and Mac under US$10.00.

This month's Game of the Month is Orwell, a unique game about surveillance culture. Looks like it will provoke some very interesting discussions!

We will meet at the Hop & Pickle, a gastropub located in South Bank. It has a nice outdoor arrangement that I am hoping will be a little more conducive to discussion than some of the other places we have tried recently.

Please also join our Steam group, titled Brisbane Geek Social Club. It is a public group, and we would love to see you on there to play some games!

This month I am planning to trial an option for people who do not wish to buy the game themselves so that they can still participate. At a regular time each week (this month Friday 7–10pm) I will live stream my own playthrough to Twitch. I am trialling this option this month to allow us the option of playing games with no Mac version or that are over the $10 limit without anyone missing out.

More details about the live stream in the next couple of days – I need to sort out how it works first!

See you there!

We are in the middle of the bar space. For those who do not know me I am in a grey cap.

There's someone I wouldn't mind bringing along but since the reservation has been made for 6 people I'll just see if there are any drop-outs

Nah, bring 'em along anyway – even if everyone does show up, it's not hard to grab an extra chair.

Hi all, I'm going to reserve a table tomorrow, so if anyone needs to update their RSVP details please do so before then so I can be approximately correct with numbers.

Looking forward to a good discussion this month!

I'm a bit new to twitch - are these vids able to be seen after the stream? I'd be interested to see what decisions other people made (I just finished the game today)

I don't think the ones I did are available, but I think it is possible to do.

Maybe I'd be better off recording them and uploading them to youtube so people can view them in their own time if they want to? I'll bring it up at the meetup.

Due to having some of the games available in the Humble Freedom Bundle already, I have some Steam keys to give away. I'm going to be distributing them at this event. Preference will go to regulars of the Video Game Club meetup (one game each) and after that will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis.

The games I have to give away are:

    The Witness
    Nuclear Throne
    Octodad Dadliest Catch
    Superbrothers Sword and Sworcery EP
    The Stanley Parable
    The Swapper
    2064: Read Only Memories
    Q.U.B.E Director's Cut
    Guacamelee Gold Edition

I also might be willing to give away Stardew Valley if someone REALLY wants that game, as I intend to get that for a different platform. Let's see if the above games get claimed first though.

I'll only be giving the games out to people who show up unless you have a fantastically convincing argument as to why I should make an exception.

Two additional games are now available: Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken and A Virus Named TOM.

I'm going to be live streaming the game tomorrow (Friday 3rd) on Twitch from 8:30pm until around 10pm I suspect. I'm not 100% sure whether we have an official Twitch account or whether I'll have to make one myself, so I'll provide more details once I know.

This is just something I'm doing so that people can attend without having to buy a new game every month, and also to allow us a bit more choice in terms of platforms and pricing.
