• Monthly Evening Symposium - IoT Privacy, Introduction to Node RED

Would you put an Amazon camera in your bedroom? Lets investigate the privacy concerns of IoT adoption, and cover some ways to regain control of your own home. Last month there were several mentions of the fabulous Node-RED tool, originated at IBM and now under the aegis of the JS Foundation. We will look at how to get started with this tool, and what you can do. Node-RED is a drag-and-drop tool for automating everything from your home to your factory. It excels at linking together disparate systems that otherwise could not interoperate. I like to think of it as "the duct-tape of IoT". Unfortunately our previously planned presentation from Stéphane Malhomme of eagle.io has had to be postponed due to speaker scheduling conflicts. • What we'll do At our monthly evening events we begin with networking and a light dinner (finger foods, beer, wine and soft drinks), then presentations commence from 6:30.

  • Workshop; The Internet of Plants from proof-of-concept to prototype

Date and Venue now confirmed. THIS HALF-DAY WORKSHOP REQUIRES ADVANCE TICKET PURCHASE. Kit sales close 13th April to allow time for kit delivery. (You can attend just the facility tour at 4:00pm for no cost, the cost for the workshop and all parts is $85. BYO laptop). Tour-only tickets are available up until the event. Please reserve your ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/iotbne-workshop-the-internet-of-plants-tickets-59097472130 In this workshop we will assemble a simple "internet connected garden health monitor" that measures, temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. Then we will explore the process of converting our collection of three modules (wifi micro-controller, moisture probe, and environmental sensor) into a single integrated product. We'll look at the process of designing a circuit board, and have a tour of the manufacturing facilities at Masters and Young, a leading Brisbane electronics manufacturer. Attendees will have their working proof-of-concept assembly to take home and deploy to their garden, and we will commission custom circuit boards for the all-in-one iteration that we design together. This workshop aims to show that electronics is as much an art as a science, and that modern tools make the learning process more friendly.
