RE: [atheists-501] Fw: The Brisbane Atheists Meetup Group Mailing List Daily Digest

Good evening,

From the people I have met in the Atheist Meetup group I would prefer that
we don't resort to gimmicks. Calm, rational, intelligent thought is
something that we are able to provide to the forum.

It is difficult to reason with people, especially in a group, who get their
sense of right and wrong from something they believe to be real and fear
above anything else.

There is also the very real threat for these people that not only are they
facing a great scary faceless monster that will punish them for thinking and
discussing things outside what the pack believes but also the threat of
being ostracised by that very group who a second ago would have supported
them. And from whom they get their sense of value and worth.

This is not my most eloquent email but in summary to me it's like trying to
get a herd of sheep to reason with you by dressing as a wolf and jumping in
the middle of the pack.

Some of my friends are religious but they are open to discussion and I
respect their views as they do mine. This is not the group that are at this
event. They are spending a lot of time (and probably money) to disprove the
rational. I'm sure there are "anti-gravity" and all sorts of groups out
there doing the same. To me, we are the opposing view. Sometime we are
popular (the science vote is pretty strong) but in other arenas we can be
weak (the atheist vote is not as popular as conventional religion).

Just as we don't like them disrespecting our views I think we should listen
to their content and encourage discussion around areas of agreement and
disagreement.

Thanks for reading.
Kathryn
