What we're about

The one genre everyone writes is horror. They're called first drafts.

Writing! is a relaxed, informal group for writers of all kinds. Everyone is welcome, whether you're a professional writer, or just starting out. All you need is passion for the written word, and a desire to produce your own.

We host a number of different types of sessions:

Write Together: Does what it says on the tin. Turn up and write! No pressure to share or do anything other than write in companionable silence (although we do tend to have a good chat after). More on that here. (http://www.meetup.com/BristolWriters/messages/boards/thread/48920729)

Knowledge Sharing Sessions: We have all sorts of writers in the group with different levels of experience and skillsets. The knowledge sessions will take the form of informal, yet structured discussions around a topic of interest (e.g. characterisation or narrative voice) where one member of the group leads with a talk/presentation and everyone else pitches in. These are generally aimed at amateur writers but everyone is welcome. More here (http://www.meetup.com/BristolWriters/messages/boards/thread/49174131).

Critique Group: a structured workshop for mutual critiquing, meeting once a month. There's usually a waitlist, so please ensure you are willing to commit to it before RSVPing. More here. (http://www.meetup.com/BristolWriters/messages/boards/thread/48920780)

Read Aloud: a new session running every alternate Saturday. Not so much a critique group as simply the opportunity to read out our work, cheer each other on and provide mutual encouragement.

Drinks and social: We work hard. We deserve the occasional break. Keep an eye on the meetups for the occasional drinks night.

Other stuff: We'll also often get word of outside workshops or submission opportunities. Depending on the nature, they'll either turn up on the meetup as an activity or be added to the Submissions Thread in the discussion boards.

Don't see what you want? Let me (Sandra (http://www.meetup.com/BristolWriters/members/14847291/)) know. One of the great things about being in charge of a group of writers is getting to hear all the wonderfully creative ideas everyone comes up with for meetups. If you don't see what you want, we can add it if there's enough interest and I have someone willing to host.

We're also on Facebook! (https://www.facebook.com/Writing-Bristol-meetup-1043616529063806/)

If you're interested in hosting, send me a message and I can get you set up.

2 -3 hours Write Together session

Horts

***Please remember to change your RSVP if you're no longer able to come.*** The meetup: Two or three hours of quiet writing on our own projects, with social writer-y chat after. See the Writing Together Sessions post here (http://www.meetup.com/BristolWriters/messages/boards/thread/48920729) for more details of what's involved.

Creative Writing Workshop

Horts

The next deadline for submissions is Monday 9 September. PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE ADDING YOURSELF TO THE RSVP We are a committed critique group of writers dedicated to workshopping fiction. (Sorry, we don't workshop plays.) Please only add yourself to the RSVP if you are truly intending on coming. This is unlike other meetup groups where your attendance is not vital. This group only works if everyone is committed. If you add yourself to the RSVP, please send Nicola (the host) a message with your email address. Email addresses are essential as this is how we exchange submissions. Be aware that meetup has a security feature which blanks ***** email addresses. To send me yours you'll need to get creative! For example myemail (at) yahoo (.) co (.) uk, etc ⮕ How it all works... *I'll send out a call for submissions before the session. If you'd like to submit, please indicate so at this point. *Three people submit a piece of creative writing. *Each submission is limited to 3,000 words max. For short stories, ideally only submit one at a time, even if it's shorter than the word limit. *Send Nicola (the host) your work as a Word doc, preferably formatted in Times New Roman, double spaced, with the pages numbered, for ease of printing/reading. *Submissions are circulated to all attendees a week before the meetup. Please budget time to read the submissions in advance of the meeting. *Try to keep all comments constructive (e.g. if you spot a problem with a story, try to provide a suggestion for how it could be made better). *We get together at the venue, have a nice drink, chat about our work, and have a lovely time. ⮕ Why the limits to attendees and word count? Workshops are time-consuming and we've only got two hours. Finally, again to reiterate - please only RSVP if you are definitely interested and will definitely come. We usually have a good 20% no-shows on most meet ups. This isn't a big problem for other meet ups, but this group does need a level of commitment, and last minute drop-outs will be unfair on everyone else. ⮕ If you're attending for the first time: We're a very friendly group, so don't be put off by all the rules! However, be aware that new attendees don't generally submit at their first session. Just come along and see how things work in the first instance. (And remember to message Nicola with your email address!) ⮕ Cost There is no charge for this meetup, but please plan to buy a drink at the venue in order to support them.

Writing at Dom's Coffee House

Dom's Coffee House

**Note that the venue will be Dom's instead of the Folk House during school holidays and half term breaks** Hello scribes. This is an informal meet up at the Folk House, Park Street, Bristol, for writing your own stuff, generating ideas, and eating cake. Just bring your laptop or notepad and look for a small group of us huddled together, then come over and say 'hello'. We meet about 6pm and write til about 8.45pm, with spontaneous breaks for chat. See you there. Oh yes... "... go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.” Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Write Together session: Sunday Write-in **informal and unhosted**

The meetup: quiet writing on our own projects, with occasional breaks. Please note that it is not necessary to do the whole day. Please feel free to just turn up for whatever hours suit you - whether that's only one or two, or the whole day. Newbies: we no longer have an official host for this, as we don't really have anyone who is able to commit to all day Sunday every Sunday, however there is usually a good crowd especially later in the afternoon and it's very informal. Feel free to just turn up and join us! ***Please remember to change your RSVP if you're no longer able to come.**
