What we're about

Hello! My name is Melissa and I live in Brookline. I am looking to have a book club type group and to meet new people in the area. I generally like novels, memoirs, short stories, and essays that are psychologically interesting and very "deep" because I am currently in graduate school studying psychoanalysis. (I like an excuse to go to dark and weird places!)

Anybody over the age of 30 is welcome to join this group. Ideally, you are an open-minded person who likes to read and is interested in having new emotional or intellectual experiences. I plan to hold the first few meetings of this group virtually, and then ideally we can start meeting outside somewhere or at cafes.

Thanks and looking forward to connecting!!

Here is the book description from Amazon and GoodReads:

"Ten years after she was seriously injured in a terrorist attack, the pain comes back to torment Iris. But that is not all: Eitan, the love of her youth, also comes back into her life. Though their relationship ended many years ago, she was more deeply wounded when he left her than by the suicide bomber who blew himself up next to her.

Iris's marriage is stagnant. Her two children have grown up and are almost independent; she herself has become a dedicated, successful school principal. Now, after years without passion and joy, Eitan brings them back into her life. But she must concoct all sorts of lies to conceal her affair from her family, and the lies become more and more complicated.

Is this an impossible predicament, or on the contrary a scintillating revelation of the many ways life's twists and turns can bring us to a place we would never have expected to be?"

April Book Club - EAST OF EDEN by John Steinbeck

Online event

Hello all,

I have always wanted to read East of Eden and this year is going to be the year. :)

I hope you will join me. General story description:

First published in 1952, East of Eden is the work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. A masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a powerful and vastly ambitious novel that is at once a family saga and a modern retelling of the Book of Genesis.

It is considered to be a milestone in the Latin American Boom. Artemio Cruz, a corrupt soldier, politician, journalist, tycoon, and lover, lies on his deathbed, recalling the shaping events of his life, from the Mexican Revolution through the development of the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
