Plato's "Charmides" dialogue

  • to
  • This location is shown only to members

  • Let's initiate this group with reading and discussing one of Plato's early dialogues, the "Charmides". The work opens with examining the concept of σωφροσύνη ("sophrosyne", considered to be a quality that manifests as temperance or self-control). Like many of Plato's works, while the dialogue attempts to define a single trait, it addresses many other important concepts in the process. Here we also encounter questions about what it means to know, and "knowing thyself".

Participants are strongly encouraged to read the entire dialogue before we begin. Attendees are welcome to come as early as 7pm and we will begin our discussion promptly at 7:30. As we approach our first meeting, I will email those who have RSVP'd my address and contact information. Looking forward to seeing you!
