5th Annual: When Hell Freezes Over

  • Zoar Valley - Valentine Flats Parking Lot

10112 Valentine Flats road, Gowanda, NY (map)

    42.438988 -78.914620

  • You hiked Zoar Valley in the summer, now experience the Gorge as most have not! We will meet at the Valentine Flats parking lot (see map), leaving most vehicles there, while car pooling to Forty Road Bridge(prior to the hill descending down to Forty Road Bridge).

This is Zoar Valley Hike 1 of 5 that I will be doing in 2017.
    (1) South Branch Rim w/ Overlook Point
    (2) South Branch Canyon to Valentine Flats
    (3) NorthWest Rim (Vail to Radio Tower)
    (4) NorthEast Rim (Vail to Holcomb Pond)
    (5) Hogsback Ridge (Vail - Canyon - Valentine Flats)

If you attend all (5) hikes, you will have learned all the access locations and routes to Zoar, except the South Rim locations (2 more). Will save these for 2018.

After your hike, we will recover the vehicles, travel to Valentine Flats (1.2mi), recover those vehicles and then onto the Wicked Glen at 29 South Water Street in Gowanda, NY. The hike should be from 2 to 3hrs depending on how much time we spend at each feature. Without stopping, you could hike it, in about 45min.

    This hike is ALL downhill.

Clothing: Warm(wool is best) and Layered, Hat(wool), Gloves(not mittens)

Boots: Rugged Hiking boots w/ Gators(8-12")

Microspikes or Snow shoes. Weather / Snow conditions dependant.

Day Pack: Filled with water, and energy bars

    Walking stick may be helpful

Note: The base of the gorge is impossible to traverse in snowshoes, that is why boots are required.

After Hike: bring a change of clothes and shoes, just in case.

Age Group: 10-my age(older than any of you).

    Animals: At your discretion.

*********** Standard BEAM Liability Statement **********

Due to the frequency of Human-bear encounters, this organizer is advising hikers within Zoar Valley to take extra precautions. You are advised to wear little noisy bells on clothing, so as to give advance warning to any bears that might be close by so that you don't take them by surprise. I am also advising anyone within the park boundaries to carry "Pepper Spray" with them in case of an encounter with a bear. Hikers should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between Black Bear feces and Grizzly Bear feces. Black Bear feces is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly Bear shit has bells in it and smells like pepper. This organizer will not under any circumstances be held liable for any injuries resulting from a failure to follow the above warning.

    **************** Car Pool Locations **************

These are some of the most commonly used Car Pool Locations

Orchard Park - Park n Ride (Rt 219 and Rt 20A)

I-290 and Niagara Falls Blvd (Starbucks)

Peace Bridge Burger King (Porter / Busti)

I have found the best method to Car Pool is to state what Car Pool Location (see above) you will be at and the exact time you are leaving. People who wish to join you can meet you there.

Ok, I just put my bear-scare face on--but I will have my spray, too! I seem to be a black bear magnet. I've encountered 5 live black bears in my life and found one dead in the woods. Only scare me when they have cubs nearby (or lick the back of my head).
