Golden Hill State Forest

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Note: If you put your name on the waiting list then you will get an email inviting you to decide whether or not you are going to join in this hike a few days before the hike. The first 12 people who respond to that email will be listed as participants in the hike. Those who don't respond to the email will remain on the waiting list which will then operate as a normal waiting list.

This is a suggestion for a hike for anyone interested in hosting it. Send me an email if you need more information or if you have never hosted an event before. You will pick the time and date, and decide the number of allowed participants (no greater than 20 though to stay under the DEC permit requirement.)

Golden Hill State Forest is one of those seldom used gems in western New York. I have hiked this trail several times and have never tired of it. Neither have I ever run into any other hikers or bikers on the trail.

This hike will be 7.2 miles on the mountain bike-hiking trail that is maintained by the WNYMBA. We will start in the middle of the forest at a small parking area (if there are too many cars we can park most of them at the main parking lot and shuttle hikers to the starting point.)

Unfortunately there is no water along the trail, so everyone needs to carry a full supply of water, certainly no less than 2 liters on a hot July day.

I'm going to switch this hike with the hike to the Bova Leanto in Allegany State park for a couple of reasons. First, WNYMBA reports that there is damage to the trails in Golden Hill State forest from horse back riding, which means significant muddy sections made all the worse by this weeks rain. Second, we will be less annoyed by the gypsy moth caterpillars on the wider road like trails of the Summit to Bova Lean to hike than on the single track in Golden Hill State Forest.
