North Country Trail From Rt 346 to Coon Run in ASP

  • Dec 31, 2015 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Note:  If you put your name on the waiting list then you will get an email inviting you to decide whether or not you are going to join in this hike a few days before the hike.  The first 12 people who respond to that email will be listed as participants in the hike. Those who don't respond to the email will remain on the waiting list which will then operate as a normal waiting list.

I go on these hikes whether or not anyone else joins in, but I need to know if others are joining as I will wait at the trailhead for late arriving participants.

This 9 mile hike will start at the North Country Trail parking area on Rt. 343. However, it is a one way hike so half of the cars have to be parked at the end of the hike in Allegany State Park. Because we have to coordinate the shuttle for this hike, if you put your name on the list for this hike you must provide the following information or else your name will be removed from the list:

1. Whether you will be driving or ridding with someone to the trailhead.

2. If you are driving, the number of additional people you can shuttle in your vehicle (in addition to anyone ridding to the trailhead with you).

3. Whether you can accommodate a dog in addition to other hikers in your vehicle.

Dogs are welcomed on this hike but shuttling them can be problematic, because not everyone is willing to transport a dog in their vehicle, thus it cannot be assumed that there will be a shuttle vehicle available for your dog. Moreover, we may need the room for people and it is not reasonable to expect others to squeeze into a back seat with your dog. However, if enough people indicate that they can accommodate a dog in addition to at least 2 other hikers then it may be possible.

The hike starts with a steady one mile climb from the Rt. 346 parking area to the NY-PA border (which is also the southern border of Allegany State Park.) We stay on the NCT/FLT until the 5-mile mark where will follow the Allegany Park trail for a little over a quarter mile to the Mt. Tuscarora Fire tower for lunch.

We return to the NCT/FLT and follow it to the Stony Brook leanto. About 1/4 mile before the end of the hike we take a tenth of a mile bushwhack off the NCT/FLT to connect with the Allegany State Park trail that will return us to the parked cars in Allegany State Park for the shuttle back to Rt. 346.

A waiver of liability will be required.  You can download it, sign it, then scan and return it to me by email, fax, or bring a signed copy with you to the hike. (Send me an email through the meetup system and request either the email address for a scanned copy or the fax number for a fax copy.) Here is the link to the release form: Release of Liability
