The Erie County forest on Genesee Road in the town of Sardinia has several well-known official trails, including portions of the Finger Lakes/Conservation Trail (FLT/CT). Those trails are generally in the eastern and northern half of the forest. Go to this link for a trail guide for the official trails in the Erie County Forest in Sardinia
The western portion of the forest also is well worth exploring. It has one unofficial trail marked with orange flagging that connects with the the FLT/CT and the Scarbuck Extension Trail.
This past winter I did an exploratory snowshoe hike in the western area and then took a group on a late March snowshow through that area. both those hikes started a the Middle Road entrance at the southern border of the forest.
To add some mileage to a summer hike, this hike will start at the Genesee road entrance, follow the FLT to the Cabin, then bushwhack along the unofficial trail untril we arrive back at the Scarbuck Extension /Trail which we will then follow to the main Scarbuck trail and back to the parking area. As you can see from the linked map of the planned track, it is a "figure 8" track that avoids repeating any of the trails.
A waiver of liability will be required. You can download it, sign it, then scan and return it to me by email, fax, or bring a signed copy with you to the hike. (Send me an email through the meetup system and request either the email address for a scanned copy or the fax number for a fax copy.)
