Upper X-Country Ski Trails - Allegany State Park

This 8.5 mile hike will take you over the upper trails in the Art Roscoe X-Country Ski Area, including the Sweetwater, Christian Hollow, and Leonard Run trails.

Meet at the Summit Area Parking Lot across the road from the trailhead. Several of us did this hike about two years ago. The trails are well marked (they are wide x-country ski trails). The planned route takes you to the scenic overlook and the summit fire tower. You can climb the stairs up to the fire tower entrance but unless you are there on a day when the park has a special event at the fire tower, the entrance to the tower cabin will be padlocked.

Dogs are allowed on the x-country ski trails from April 1 to October 31. Note that when Maggie and I return from a hike on the lower trails last year we encountered a bear in the parking lot.

Once the snow flies, only x-country skiing is allowed. In the summer the x-country trails are used for mountain biking and trail running, in addition to hiking, but these trails are seldom used. I usually come across only one or two other users on these hikes.

Is this a morning or night walk because its posted as 10 pm?

Thanks for pointing that out - for some reason meetup.com defaults to PM for the time, probably because meetup.com started as a meet-at-a-bar type organizer. Three people (Mo, Michelle, and Shelby) have already signed up - if they are expecting a night hike then I have to leave the 10 pm time for them - but if they simply assumed it was a day hike, then I can change it to 10 am. So I'll change it to 10 am as i intended it to be, but if the three of them were expecting to go on a night hike I'll just add a duplicate event for 10 pm.

Note: there is no longer any access to the fire tower. They built a locked fence around the base.

Maggie, thank you for posting that information. Always good to know if the changes before people head out.
