The last item on the list, the information you leave at with a trusted friend, is what I call the "Zero Essential" because it did not appear on the classic "Ten Essentials" but should have been the first item.

And another classic example of a search that would have started three days earlier had the day hiker used the Zero Essential - hopefully they'll find him alive. Also, note that he planned for a day hike but it doesn't appear that he prepared for an unexpected night in the woods.

"According to Capt. Dean York with the Provo Fire Department, the search began just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. York says he left to go hiking around 11:30 Saturday morning and hasn't been seen or heard from since. Mayle's family reported him missing sometime Tuesday morning.

Roommate Daniel Blake says he saw Mayle leave Saturday morning, but didn't speak to him before he left. Blake also said that he and his other roommates noticed that Mayle wasn't home Sunday morning but that he hadn't said anything to any of them and they thought maybe Mayle had gone on vacation without telling them.

The hiker is believed to have a backpack with a water bladder with him but likely doesn't have any other camping supplies because he was just planning on a day hike."
