What we're about

The Buffalo Movie and Video Makers (BM-VM) is a local group; a club of cinema enthusiasts who meet once a month as a community of like-minded individuals and hobbyists. It was established in 1934 and is one of the oldest running organizations of its kind in the U.S. We usually meet on the 3rd Mondays of the month from Sept. - June at the Screening Room (880 ALBERTA DRIVE AMHERST, NY 14226. Part of the Boulevard Mall, entrance facing the Wegmans on Alberta drive).

Current and past BM-VM members include amateur filmmakers and advanced filmmakers with more formal education and experience, and ages range from late teens to retirees. All members share some interest in film, whether its learning about various aspects of the filmmaking process, or watching and discussing films made by members (shown on the large screen at the Screening Room) or hearing about the latest technical developments in the home video and professional industry. We may not be everyone's cup of tea, but feel free to come to some meetings to see if you fit in. We can't promise to get your dreams made, that's all up to you and not what we're about, but we can promise to be a supportive shoulder.

Have questions on script writing? We have script writers in the group. Are you intimidated by lighting or camera work? We have people who can give you tips and lend a hand. Do you just need motivation to go and do it? If we can do it, so can you.

There is no admission to attend the meetings, but there is an annual membership of only $20 which allows you to screen your films at meetings, and also to enter and judge entries in our two annual film contests (In October is our Shorty Contest - films 5 minutes or less; in April is our Film Contest for longer entries). Finally, we also have a Facebook page under "Buffalo Movies & Video Makers", https://www.facebook.com/BMVM1934/ . Hope to see you soon!

ANNUAL SHORTY CONTEST!

The Screening Room in the Boulevard Mall

SHORTY FILM CONTEST! We’ll show BM-VM members' contest entries tonight. After viewing all entries, we’ll vote on them. This will be followed up by a brief Q&A with all entrants about their films. Results and awards for the top three vote-getters will be announced and presented at the Nov. BM-VM meeting (Monday, Nov. 18). To participate in the Shorty contest and/or vote on the entries you must be a paid member in good standing* (see below for further details). Non-members and visitors can attend the meeting and participate in the viewing and discussion for FREE. Here are the BM-VM Shorty Film Contest rules: 1. Contest open to all members in good standing.* 2. Time limit of 5 minutes OR LESS (that’s why they’re “shorties”!). This includes the opening and ending credits. 3. No film made for profit or which has been previously entered in a club contest is eligible. 4. Entry must be in at the October 21st meeting. 5. Title slates must appear at beginning and end. 6. Judges must be members in good standing* and present. 7. Source material must be entirely the work of the contestant(s) except for the use of music or narrator on sound track. 8. A contestant may enter more than one film but is eligible for only one award based on number of votes. 9. Contestants must provide playback method unless submitted on DVD or USB drive. Submissions must be viewable to be judged. 10. Three films is the minimum number for judging. 11. First, second and third place winners will receive awards. Awards will be given as the contest chair sees fit. Winners will be announced and awards presented at the November 18th meeting. 12. Contest chair has final say over any disputes. *A BM-VM member in good standing is someone who has paid their annual BM-VM dues. Membership is $20 for the Sept. 2019 - August 2020 season, and you can pay for a membership at the beginning of the meeting if you haven’t already. Once paid, you’ll also be eligible to enter and/or vote in the March 2020 BM-VM film contest as well. But admission to the meeting is FREE! Visitors are welcome! Concessions are available for purchase, including beer, wine, coffees and snacks. On the 3rd Monday of every month we meet as a club to pursue the common goal of being a community of filmmakers. The Buffalo Movie-Video Makers club was originally established in 1934 as the Amateur Cinema Club of Buffalo and has been meeting regularly for 85 years (!). The club membership is made up of amateur and professional filmmakers. Check us out on our Facebook page: Buffalo Movie & Video Makers https://www.facebook.com/BMVM1934/
