Welcome to the Columbia Outdoors Adventure Network!

Welcome to our group! This group has been formed by a dedicated group of volunteers so that people with the same interests can get together and have a great time in the outdoors. We are glad that you are a part of our group and hope to see you on an event in the very near future! Please see below for the answers to many questions that you may have about participating in our events.

How do I sign up for an event?
Signing up for an event on meetup is very easy! Click on the "calendar" link on the left to see the upcoming events. Each will have a description of the event and will include a list of things that you may need. Interested? Just RSVP "yes". Please note that if you sign up for an event- you have a specific time frame to change your mind. Last minute changes need to be made with that event's organizer, who should have their contact information listed in the event description. Please be sure that you let the event organizer know about your change in plans! Waiting around for people who don't come delays the events and causes unnecessary stress. It is not necessary to RSVP "No" to all events that are posted that you cannot attend, unless it is an event that you were expected to want to attend.

Do I need special equipment for these events?
The most important thing you can bring to any event is a sense of adventure and a positive attitude! Comfortable shoes are a must on any hiking event. Longer hikes that are posted will have a list of essential equipment. For these, you may wish to have a good pair of hiking shoes/boots as they provide better grip and support on the trails. A good backpack is always a good idea to bring along on the hike along with water, snacks and anything else that is listed on the event's description. For events in specialized areas such as kayaking, rafting, camping, rock climbing, etc. the event organizer will post a list of needed equipment for that event. Don't rush out and buy equipment right away- your event organizer can tell you what you need and may actually have suggestions on where to best get those items. There may even be equipment that you can borrow! Email the event organizer on meetup- just click on their name and you will see an option to do this. You can also put a note in the comments section at the bottom of the event page. This way everyone will have the benefit of seeing the conversation.

How do we get to the events?
On each event page, a meeting site is designated for attendees to gather. We attempt to form carpools to any event taking place out of town. This helps with potential parking problems at the event site and also helps keep the group together. If you carpool with another member, it is customary to offer the driver money toward gas costs. If you choose to meet the group where the event is taking place, please be sure to let the event organizer know ahead of time. If you volunteer to drive- please be sure that you have all of your current insurance, registration, and other paperwork on hand in your vehicle. We thank all who are willing to help out!

Are dogs allowed at the events?
Many of the events that are posted are dog friendly. If this is the case, then it will be clearly posted in the event description. Your dog will need to be on a leash on these events. You are also asked to be sure that the trail is left in good condition for hikers coming behind your pet! Some events are not suitable for pets, and they should not attend. This will also be posted in the event description. Please keep in mind that if there is a camping event, no pets are allowed to be left in the campground while you participate in the event. Those members who have special needs requiring the use of a service animal need to be sure to notify the event organizer.

Are guests allowed to attend?
You are welcome to bring along guests, but please adjust your RSVP to accurately reflect the number of people in your party.

Do I need to pay for the events?
Many of the events that we have in our group are free of charge. Sometimes there may be a park admission fee or other charge associated with the event. These fees will always be clearly stated in the event description along with details on how to pay. If there is an event such as camping in which reservations were made, you will need to discuss ahead of time refund policies as some of those sites require pre-payment whether you attend or not.

What about safety and/or emergencies on the events?
This group's organizers are comprised completely from volunteers. Each member attending has a responsibility to behave in such a way that they do not cause harm to themselves or to others. Please stay with the group and do not wander off on your own to explore. Outdoor activities to include hiking, camping, rafting, kayaking, swimming, etc. involve inherent risks. It is your responsibility as members, guest of members or family of members to observe appropriate safety measures during any and all activities concerning the group. By participating in this voluntary group you expressly waive any and all claims that could arise from any of the activities planned to include: travel to and from and during the trip and to understand the organizer and assistant organizers do not assume liability for personal injuries, death, destruction or loss of personal property. By participating in the group you expressly waive any and all such claims against each and every other member in the group, including without limitation any and all claims against the group organizer or assistant organizer.
In any activity involving water- the ability to swim and wearing the appropriate safety equipment is a must. The same use of proper safety gear is a requirement on any other type of event.
When we hike we have someone who volunteers to be the lead- and then someone who is the "sweep" and is at the end. This way we can account for all members in between. If someone is tired, not feeling well or may need to slow down, then we take the time to allow for these events. Event organizers bring along a first aid kit- but remember that we all help in an emergency.

What about weather cancellations?
The event organizer ultimately decides whether or not an event is taking place. Cancellations are not matters to be taken lightly, and if severe weather is called for, please respect the organizer's decision. You have the right and ability as a voluntary member to proceed with an event should it be canceled, under your own recognizance.

What if I have an idea for an event?
We welcome new ideas! Any of the assistant organizers can help make your ideas come to reality You can email any of the assistant organizers and they can answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

Again, we welcome you and hope that you will enjoy your future activities with our group!
