  • Rising beyond #MeToo
Dear Members, Was #metoo a tipping point for you? Do you want to talk about it? Have you been looking for a place to connect with other women who've started talking about their experiences? It is challenging to have any kind of historical perspective on current events. We cannot know how history will record the events of the past year - who will they deem the "winners," whose stories will shape the narrative? Because we cannot have that kind of long view, it is useful sometimes to step back from daily news to look at something from a broader perspective. In October of 2017, the US experienced a kind of social earthquake in the form of a New York Times article exposing the sexual abuses Harvey Weinstein had perpetrated for years over less powerful women. These stories were always skimming the surface as rumors that were all too believable, but it took that tipping point for him to experience negative consequences. Later that month, Alyssa Milano popularized an old hashtag campaign, #MeToo, to emphasize the breadth and depth of the problems of sexual harassment and assault in our country, and a movement was born. Whether you call this the #MeToo movement, The Reckoning, or any other label, there is no denying that there was a perceptible shift in the way and time in which we discuss sexual harassment and assault. It has become a cultural phenomenon, complete with its own backlash and challenges. Let's hear from our speakers, the situations or challenges they have witnessed and tips to overcome those challenges and stand for yourselves. Agenda: 6:00pm - 6:30pm : Sign-in/Snacks and Netwoking 6:30pm - 7:15pm : #MeToo Speakers 7:15pm - 8pm: Networking The real history of the hashtag: https://www.cnn.com/2017/10/17/us/me-too-tarana-burke-origin-trnd/index.html How 2017 became the Year of the Reckoning: https://www.dailynews.com/2017/12/29/how-meto-turned-2017-into-the-year-of-the-reckoning/ Time named the Silence Breakers the People of the Year and summarized some stories: http://time.com/time-person-of-the-year-2017-silence-breakers/ Is there a generational divide in the movement? https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/national-international/Me-Too-Movement-Starting-Generational-Divides-471543283.html?amp=y A timeline of the start of a movement: https://www.fastcompany.com/40504569/this-me-too-timeline-shows-why-2017-was-a-reckoning-for-sexism Who does or doesn't this movement represent?
