A little slow off the blocks but I'm pleased to confirm our first event of the year! (we also have a couple more already lined up to follow)
This event will be hosted by Comparethemarket (BGL Group); one of the most well known and leading digital distributors of insurance and household financial services.
The evening will follow a theme of managing distributed teams and/or using outsourced development. We will see talks from Morgan Sowden, and Max Itskovich.
Talk 1: Morgan Sowden, CTO & Co-Founder @ PayDesk.
Topic: Managing high performance distributed teams: How to boost productivity when not everyone is in the same office.
Talk 2: Max Itskovich, serial entrepreneur based out of Dnipro, Ukraine. He currently runs a software development agency, with 50+ developers based out of Dnipro and Kharkiv. His teams are working for companies based in over eight European countries. Max also coordinates the Dnipro IT entrepreneurs community and founder and head deputy at Dnipro IT Cluster. He started his career as a software engineer, and worked as a remote developer for over ten years.
Topic: Is the future offshore?
In Ukraine there are over 200,000 IT professionals working for over 5500 software agencies who provide services to clients all over the world. This software-outsourcing business is worth over $8.4 billion/year. London-based companies, struggling to hire locally, are increasingly looking at places such as Ukraine to find qualified engineers. Being on the “other side” of delivery, Max will share some key organisational, cultural and management insights into running a distributed team. He will share his view of why Ukrainian developers are excellent at engineering and less so at communication and entrepreneurship. He will explain and demystify "outsourcing" vs "outstaffing"; highlight the risks you may have building a remote team, but also how to minimise them. He will also provide insight into how a remote agency sees their client, and how they manage an engineering team for a foreign customer.
As always, numbers are limited and it's first come / first served for all of our members, so please do RSVP on our meetup page ASAP if you wish to reserve your place. Guests welcome.
Please arrive around 6pm ready for the first talk to start at 6:30pm.
This will be followed promptly by food, refreshments and networking!
Address: White Collar Factory,[masked] Derwent, City Rd, Old Street, London EC1Y 2BP
