Confused about what fracking, shale gas, tight gas, coalbed methane and unconventional energy are? What is it? Where does it come from? How do we extract it?
Want to know more about the potential for energy production and find out what impact that these systems have? Get yourself along to the Lounge on the 25th February 2014 to find out more.
Alexis Keech, co-ordinator of Green Drinks Leeds will give some background information on unconventional energy and the strategies that are currently used to abstract it.
Claire Fauset is leading the Frack Free Leeds movement and has been involved in the Balcombe and Barton Moss Anti-Fracking protests.
Climate scientist and activist Bill Mckibben says we need to keep 20% of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground if we are going to keep global warming below 2 degrees and avoid dangerous climate change. Rather than heeding this warning and switching to renewable energy sources, the government are pursuing a 'dash for gas' and dangerous new methods of accessing gas supplies that were previously inaccessible. Claire’s talk will explain why new techniques for extracting gas, like fracking, coal bed methane and underground coal gasification are dangerous, taking us down entirely the wrong road and will not be a solution to rising fuel prices as well as why they have sparked a wave of successful mass protests. The talk this month will be at 7pm with a 7.15pm start!
We will be upstairs at The Lounge (www.loungebarandgrill.com), which means less noise disruption (though further to travel to the bar…)
