What we're about

Cafe Inquiry is a casual monthly get-together to meet people and discuss topics of science and philosophy. Each month we will select a topic to discuss from a secular, humanist, or atheist perspective.

We will have discussion topics on issues like free will, ethics, aesthetics, culture, the scientific method, and current events. Interested in thoughtful discussion or have topic to recommend? Sign up to try us out or send me a message with a topic or general thoughts for a discussion topic.

Join us afterwards for food and/or drinks, and to continue or revisit any thoughts at the meeting. Free and open to the public.

This month's discussion topic is: Brexit Brexit is political shorthand for the policy goal of taking Britain out of the European Union. Two years ago, voters in Britain chose 52 to 48 to leave the European Union. However, since that time the British Parliament has been unable to agree on the specific terms of the separation. In some of the worst defeats in history, the British Parliament overwhelmingly rejected Brexit agreements negotiated by Prime Minister May. Because the Parliament has been unable to agree on a Brexit, the U.K. is gearing up to participate in E.U. elections on May 23rd. The U.K.'s two major political parties are widely expected to lose significant representation in the election to pro-Brexit and pro-Remain political parties. The vote is considered in some ways a fair gauge as to the political winds for Brexit - both for Brexiters and Remainers. What are the goals and benefits of Brexit as a policy? What are the economic and political dangers of a hard Brexit? Multiple alternative Brexit options have been proposed: a customs-union arrangement, hard Brexit, and prime minister May's approach, and a 2nd referendum. What are the most likely ways that Brexit will finally end? What would be the best possible resolution for Brexit? After the discussion we will head over to Beau Thai down the street for those who wish to have food and continue the conversation.
