What we're about

The eastern slopes of the Rockies have some of the best paddling in North America with over 20 rivers within easy reach of Calgary, offering everything from novice to advanced runs. Paddling is very much a team activity, and the purpose of this group is to provide a forum for paddlers to find kindred spirits and organize trips with a minimum of bureaucracy and cost. Trips will cater to all abilities and include novice to advanced river runs, which are suitable for kayaks and canoes. Paddling in Alberta is a seasonal activity that begins in mid-May with the start of Spring run-off, and finishes in mid-October. During the active paddling season events will be mostly day trips, with the occasional multi-day trip on rivers such as the Red Deer and Kootenay, and during the off-season, pool rolling sessions and other training events will be posted. A special thank you to Aquabatics, Calgary’s leading paddlesports retailer, for sponsoring this Meetup group. Please follow the links below for more information:

Kananaskis River - paddle day

Canoe Meadows Day Use Area, HWY 40

**** going forward these will be dependant on flows, weather and participation.****

Meet at Canoe Meadows at 11 am (depending on water release) and we will set up shuttle from there.

*** If there is interest for an introduction to the river we will do a lower run first. Please let me know when you sign up if this is an option you would like. If there is enough to do a lower run I will set a time for each. Max numbers will be 7 for each run depending on experience.

The upper Kan is a nice class 2+/3 run with lots of play and practice spots. There are surf waves, continuous rapids and great eddy practice areas.

This is an intermediate run, you should be comfortable in class 2/3 paddling. Suitable for all whitewater boats as well as rafts, canoes and some inflatables.

Equipment you should have: standard safety (throw bag, pfd, helmet, bailing device), float bags are a great help.

Flows are dependant on the dam release.
