Presenters: Sarah Arthurs and Seth Leon of the Alberta Community and Co-operative Association(ACCA)
Over the last 5 years the ACCA has had the privilege of supporting and following the evolution of Opportunity Development Co-ops in Alberta. ODCs are a model which creates the space for neighbours and colleagues to gather social and financial capital around projects which provide economic and social benefit to their communities. The democratic structure allows for the engagement of co-op members and the accountability of co-op leadership. The legal structure provides a conduit for RRSP eligible local investing in local projects. This model is being prototyped in rural Alberta and is completely transferable to urban projects. This discussion will be of interest to community association members, community economic development and community development practitioners, local business people, individuals connected to social enterprise as well as established co-ops and credit unions.
Sarah and Seth look forward to sharing this grown in Alberta co-operative model and exploring possible Calgary applications.
