This month we will be discussing the original Bioshock. Bioshock is an alternate reality in which an underwater city is built that is completely free from any government regulation. The ultimate social experiment. Some of the main themes touch on the depravity of humans when given limitless freedom, the risks of unbridled scientific discovery, and the benefits of a collective system of checks and balances on progress.
It is kind of the opposite of the last game we discussed in that the focus is on the action. Much of the storyline, (ie. the rise and fall of Rapture) is told through audio records of the inhabitants that have been left behind. The mood and atmosphere of the city is a large part of what makes this game great. It is a game that is very dark, eerie, and tense, so be aware. :)
This is a fantastic first person shooter released by 2K games in 2007. It has sold over 4 million copies, averaged a critic rating of 9.5/10, and won multiple "Game of the Year" awards in 2007. It is relatively inexpensive ($15 used), definitely a must-play for anyone who doesn't mind a little spookiness in their games.
Obligatory warning: We will be talking about the game in it's entirety, including the ending and alternate storylines. So if you haven't finished it by the time we meetup, there will be spoilers.
Hope to see everyone there.
