Car Camping - Okanagan, BC

Okanagan Lake

Warm weather here we come! This May-long, we're off to the Okanagan! Hiking, climbing, scrambling, beaches, boating - what could be better? (Car camping: You drive to a site and pitch your tent; not to be confused with backpacking or RV'ing it) Sign up even if you have no gear or previous camping experience and we will figure this out.

We will be camping in Ellison Provincial Park, 25 minutes south west of Vernon, BC. Outside of the hopefully warm weather, this offers quick access to hiking day trips (eg. Okanagan Mountain Prov. Park, Cathedral Prov. Park), scrambles (eg. near Revelstoke), outdoor climbing (eg. Ellison, Cougar Canyon, Skaha). As this is vineyard country, it may be easy to grab a bottle at the end of a day out. On the Monday, keeners can break camp early to get in some trails up at Glacier National Park (though it may still have snow).

Note: You are not guaranteed a spot until I have received payment from you ($26). Anyone unpaid a couple week prior to the event will be bumped to the waiting list. We'll also meet a week or so beforehand to coordinate camping supplies, carpooling, etc.

ITINERARY:

These are the rough plans.

Day 1 - Friday, May 17th:

Meet in Calgary at 2:45, to coordinate carpooling and hit the road for 3pm. Drive from Calgary to campsite (6-7 hours), set up camp, sleep. Check in closes at 10pm, gates close at 11pm.

Day 2 & Day 3 - Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & May 19th:

Depending on people's interests, groups might choose to hike, scramble, outdoor climb, look for good wine, chill at the beach, drink, build a fire, etc. At least one group will be hiking daily. (*excited*)

Day 4 - Monday, May 20th:

Take down camp. Check out by 11am. Possible short hike, scramble, climb, etc. Drive back to Calgary (6-7 hours).

CAMPSITES:

Three sites have been reserved to a maximum of 4 people per site (3 tents/site on 2 sites, 2 tents on one site). It will cost $26/person total based on 4 people per site for everyone to stay Friday, Saturday, Sunday night. One vehicle is permitted per site - additional vehicles are permitted at a cost of $12/vehicle/night - if you want to drive, make sure passengers are okay with splitting this extra cost. Money for gas is also extra.

Services at the campsite include washrooms, showers, firewood, and spring drinking water.

EQUIPMENT:

Car camping checklist can be found here for everything you are required to bring:

http://www.meetup.com/Calgary-Gen-Y-Outdoor-Adventurers/files/

Drugs are not permitted. If the elevation isn't high enough for you, find another trip.

Gear can be rented at either Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) or UofC Outdoor Center.  Once we know who is all going, we will get together to see who has what gear so we can share things.

DRIVING AND DIRECTIONS:
We will meet at the in Calgary meeting point and carpool from there. Please be on time as we will only wait a short while past the departure time before we leave. It'll take 6 - 7 hours to drive (Google Maps).

Park Use Regulations:

  • Quiet time is 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. Please respect the other campers. No electronic sound devices.
  • Leave no trace: Take a picture, not a piece of the park. Use trails. Reduce odours by using garbage bins, and leaving cooking supplies and food inside vehicles.
  • Fire only permitted in designated rings.

Great weekend, great job Erika. By the way did someone lose a black diamond brand tent case. I found it with my stuff.

Perhaps I could go to the Okanagan Lake myself and meet up with you guys while there. I can take care of my accommodation and we all meetup for activities. If this is possible left me know your info? Cheers

Hi Nathan, That might work, but I can't guarantee that we'll be able to connect. I don't know what cell reception is like, and you may also want to check for accomodation availability. My cell is listed in the event details above. Feel free to message me if you need more information.

At this point I've received payment from all attendees, so unless something unexpected happens, its a little unlikely.
