  • "Geo" Trivia Night at Calgary GoGeomatics March Meetup

    Bank & Baron P.U.B

Hey folks, we're back at the Bank & Baron this month, on Steven Ave. We've got the same room as before, directly to the left as you enter the bar. Hoping to see more U of C students this month - let's get it crowded so that next month they move us to the vault room downstairs! At 8 PM we'll be running a trivia game - the prize is a consultation with Jonathan about networking/job seeking. So bring your thinking caps, and remember - a small amount of alcohol is actually a performance *enhancer*. Look forward to seeing you all there!

  • Calgary GoGeomatics & National Geomatics Competition Social Extravaganza

February’s Meetup is a special occasion. In conjunction with the National Geomatics Competition, GoGeomatics Calgary will be hosting a social icebreaker function at the Kilkenny Irish Pub. This is very near U of C, as well as the hotel that the delegates are staying. There is a floor space that we think will be good for the event, and we will be ordering food and drinks. We are planning on doing ice-breaker games and such (with prizes hopefully!) on the projector and many TV's they have. Our special guest is Jonathan Murphy, Founder of GoGeomatics Canada. The National Geomatics Competition is a student led event that sees students from post-secondary geomatics programs across Canada compete in a consulting case studies. There will be a conference held with sponsor booths and geomatics presentations. Come out and join us for a fun evening of games and socializing that is sure to be memorable. You can find more information about the National Geomatics Competition here: www.nationalgeomaticscomp.ca

  • GoGeomatics Calgary April Social w/ Ron Robinson Speaker

You’re invited to the GoGeomatics Calgary April Social at Brewsters on 11th Avenue! This free, fun networking event will bring together students, industry professionals, managers, and more from across the Canadian geomatics community. Our group is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Ron Robinson, who will be doing a presentation for the occasion. After graduating from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1974, Ron Robinson had to choose between pursuing an ALS before they changed to the university syllabus, or go to St Lucia to work for CUSO – he passed up working in paradise and obtained his ALS in 1977. Ron was fortunate to work for a small company in Edmonton that performed a healthy cross-section of surveys and projects including subdivision applications, subdivision surveys, road widenings, and oil and gas surveys throughout Alberta. Ron made an attempt to become a BCLS moving to Victoria in 1991, but it was not enough action for him and he pined for the challenges of oil and gas projects in Alberta. In 1992, Ron joined Challenger Surveys, and over the 35 plus years with Challenger was lucky enough to have worked on oil and gas projects in all 3 Western provinces. Shortly after obtaining his CLS in 1995, he was surveying well sites in Fort Laird, and then in the 2000’s the Mackenzie Delta in the NWT. He has the unique experience of seeing the surveying industry evolve from using transit, chain, plumb bob and Leroy set in 1974 to today's GPS, UAV, LiDAR, terrestrial scanners, GIS and CAD software.
