July Long Weekend Summits (Advanced)

  • Shouldice Arena

1515 Home Road NW, Calgary, AB (map)

    51.070766 -114.164421

  • So it looks like we will have to be content with the Yamnuska circuit.  We will only do as much as is safe.  Please note that if we get to the crux and deem the summit unsafe I will expect us ALL to turn back.  We have to be very conservative.  If the summit is unsafe we may venture into the northern meadows.

There are no resources this weekend for search and rescue so take this under advisement when you come on the hike. We will be responsible for ourselves and each other.

Proper secure hiking boots and trekking poles are required.

I expect we will do about 10km in 4-6hours. The trail is through mixed forest, and very steep scree slopes with extensive exposure to cliffs.  The weather is supposed to be hot so please pack more than the recommended 2L of water. We will snack at the crux and lunch on the west saddle or in the meadows.

The trail will be busy. Therefore, I have suggested a meetup time of 8am at Shouldice or 9am at the Yamnuska parking lot.  I will be in a Black Lincoln MKT at the north side of the shouldice parking lot.  I wont have room to carpool.  If others are carpooling a 10$ per person fee will apply. Please offer if you can. I know two people are asking already.

As always at the end of the hike we will look at tea/icecream/or a light meal out.  Currently, I hope to make it to Canmore and go to the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company.  Other suggestions are welcome.

We will also discuss other options for the rest of the weekend. I am thinking Skogan Pass to Pigeon Mountain on Sunday or Monday but I will take a look at the access on Saturday.  So far I have only been able to fly over the area.

If you need to reach me my cell # is[masked]-6562.

Looking forward to seeing you all,
    Heidi

You are more than welcome to meet at the trail head. We will be there at 9am. To get there take highway 1 toward canmore. Take the exit north on highway 1X and connect to highway 1A. Turn right at the t-intersection on to highway 1A east...a couple of kilometers down the road is the turn off (left) into Yamnuska parking lot.

Thank you for the update Daniel. I know generally parks is asking most people to stay home this weekend due to their lack of resources to respond to distress calls and the trail conditions. In fact, I am just heading back to Calgary and may be able to get a better update once I'm in the office. Plus I still don't know if I will be on call for the weekend. So in the meantime, I think an attempt at the yamnuska circuit might be a safe bet for Saturday and maybe we can brainstorm something else for Sunday and Monday. As with all things these days this will be dependant on what mother nature has wrought. I will post again when I have more news.

Here's the highway conditions from 511, as of Tuesday:

Highway 1 - from Highway 40 to Canmore - Westbound traffic is restricted to emergency and relief services and local resident vehicles only.

Highway 40 - Galatea to Jct Hwy 1 - Closed

The conditions for the week-end? Who knows?

We have family coming from Ottawa Thursday and from Alaska in July, so we won't be hiking with you in July. We look forward to connecting for a hike when we can. I (Rod) really have enjoyed the photos of your hikes. It is pretty awesome to come across bear foot prints and the remains of the bear's lunch like you did..great photos!
All the best on your hiking. Rod

To climb Heart Mountain, I recommend you park at Quaite Trail.
It's a boring start but a good end.

I may still be on call as a first responder for the weekend. I doubt we'll be able to get to Barrier so I've changed the meetup location for now. I'll keep you posted as the week goes along.
