D5: Grotto Mountain Hike / Scramble / Ridge Walk
If you are new to CORA and never hiked with us before, please read the description carefully. You will also need to answer 2 questions to be eligible to attend, assuming you have the experience required. Grotto Mnt is a very steep hike to the ridge followed by easy scrambling. It offers super views of the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks. Where: Canmore - See driving directions below Group Size: 10 - 12 Difficulty: Difficult Hike / scramble and Ridge walk (see photo) Above average level of fitness is required Distance: 10-12 km (roundtrip) Height Gain: 1425 m Pace: Moderate Hiking Time: Approx. 4 hrs up and 2 hrs down + 3 hrs driving. Environmental Hazards: Bears, cougars, wind chills, altitude, rain & snow. Basic Gear: 3 season hiking gear (backpack, waterproof hiking boots, poles, gaiters, windstopping shell layers, microspikes, rain coat, food and snacks, 2 - 3 litres of water, toque/beanie, gloves), camera, headlamp, sunglasses, first aid kit. Technical Gear: None • Jeans, casual shoes, runners, and cotton garments are absolutely prohibited! Trip etiquette: CORA trips start at the trailhead. Provide some gas $$ to your driver by the end of the trip. Oh, and by joining this trip, you are bound to CORA Rules of Conduct ( You'll also be expected to read and sign a trip waiver at the parking lot or the trailhead. Driving Directions: Head west out of Calgary on the TransCanada highway # 1 to Canmore 106km (66.2 miles). Take the first Canmore exit off ramp, then head back east on the old 1A highway (left hand turn). You will see Grotto up to your left. A few kilometers down this road you will see a sign for "Indian Flats Road" and the Alpine Club of Canada. This is a left hand turn off the 1A, continue up to the Alpine Club lower parking lot. The trailhead starts a little bit back down the hill across from the Alpine Club maintenance area buildings.
