D5 - Bow Peak Hike / Scramble

If you think this photo is awesome then you need to sign up for this hike. This is a photo from last year's hike that I organized. The views are Spectacular, however you need to pay attention to the following:

There is a river/ lake crossing with water perhaps knee deep. Come prepared with sandals or a spare set of shoes.

There is a scramble to get to the top of the mountain. If you are inexperienced / uncomfortable with scrambling, please don't sign up.

I highly encourage you to look at the following link for a description of this hike and photos.

Description: Day Hike/ scramble
Distance: 12.6 km return
Roundtrip Time: 6 - 7 hours on trail + 5 hrs driving.
Height gain: 960m

Bow Peak is a lovely easy scramble on the West side of the Icefields Parkway near Bow Lake. From the Peak, we'll have views of Cirque Peak and glaciers surrounding the area, including along the Icefield Parkway and Yoho to the west.

Please note you will need to be in good shape to complete this event as the elevation gain is significant.

To get there we'll meet in the parking lot at Dalhousie C-Train Station. From there we will drive west on Hwy 1 to the Bow Lake area, just across from Cirque Peak.

Weather forecast: unknown.
Trail conditions: unknown.

Members are free. Non-members fee is $5. Gas contributions for drivers (see below).

CORA trips start at the trailhead. As a convenience to participants only, we meet at the meeting point in Calgary then car pool from there. Please be on time. We don't want to have to wait around long. You may choose to meet us at the trailhead, but please advise us ahead of time. Please indicate in your RSVP COMMENTS if you can drive, if necessary. Please reimburse some $$ to drivers for gas.

Hey Conrad, would you be making a final list of the participants for this hike? I am new here n on the waiting list bt don't really know how this works?

    July 30, 2013

In case you didn't read the description:
    1. You will need sandals / crocs to cross the mouth of the river / lake. The water will be above your knees in some spots. Be prepared it is cold.
    2. We will depart no later than 7:15. Be on time or you will miss out.
    3. There is a scramble to get to the top of the Peak! If you feel more comfortable with a helmet, bring it along. The scramble is well worth the view, but it is a bit of a struggle to get up there.
    4. If you are signed up for more than one hike, some of you are I know, make up your mind or I will make it for you. The waiting list is long and I want 12 people to come out! I don't like NO SHOWS.

I read some post and it seems there are more than one crossing, is this correct? And how hard is the final scrambling?

      July 30, 2013

  • Jean

Sorry, I am an easy going hiker. Didn't know what scramble was until a few days ago when I asked a friend about it. When I become more experienced, I will do scramble. Enjoy the hike!! Jean
