Calgary Scrambling and Mountaineering Club (CSMC) recently arranged a customized avalanche skill training for scramblers and snowshoers with Mountain Skills Academy. This is a course that CORA organizers, (or those who are active within CORA and/or want to be organizers) could also sign up for -- courtesy of Tom Waddell from CSMC.

We will be able to finance 4 people for this training: Two for a customized AST 2 course for scramblers and ice climbers and two for general AST-1. However, if there is less interest in AST-2, we might be able to sponsor 3 AST-1 positions.

In order to be able to considered for this funding, you must satisfy the following criteria:

- You are a 2014 CORA Organizer who organizes snowshoeing and scrambling trips.

- You are an active CORA member who does snowshoeing and scrambling with CORA.

OUTLINE FOR Customized AST-2 COURSE: In order to be able to take the AST 2 course for scramblers and ice climbers, you must have AST-1 certificate as the prerequisite. Also keep in mind that this AST-2 course is a customized course. It is NOT the full AST-2 that requires 4 day training. This is a 3 day course.

• Dates: February 22 (classroom), March 8&9 (field day)

OUTLINE FOR AST-1 COURSE: No prerequisites required. This is the general AST-1 training for the general public.

• Dates: Variable (see the calender in the MSA website).

CONDITIONS: Sign up to the waitlist first and fill out the preliminary questions. Priorities will be given to CORA organizers.

• For customized AST-2 takers: Once you are in the RSVP list, contact CSMC president Tom Waddell tom[at] and ask for discount code before registering MSA.

• For AST-1 takers: Register with the MSA website.

AFTER THE COURSE: Collect your receipts and forward it to CORA Treasurer Katalin or to me at VP Leadership and Training (scan the document and attach it to email if convenient). Once we receive the receipt, we will refund your training money to you as soon as we can.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a CORA event, but a CORA sponsored event for event organizers and active members. As such, you are responsible for your own safety and equipment during the course. You must also arrange your own transportation to Canmore. You will likely be expected to sign a waiver when you complete your registration at Mountain Skills Academy website or before beginning the course.
