Hwy 1 & Home Road, Calgary, AB
Leaving Friday afternoon for a weekend of ski touring in the Parker Ridge area near the Columbia Icefields, based out of the Hilda Creek hostel. I have 6 spots booked at Hilda Creek for the Friday March 10 and Saturday March 11. The group will ski/ride in the Parker Ridge area both Saturday and Sunday, and return to Calgary probably by late Sunday evening.
The goal of this outing is to find a good ski/riding terrain. Please consider this trip if your skiing ability is sufficient for large and complex terrain in a range of snow conditions. Being able to competently descend through uneven snow or dense forest is required. I will inquire with those on the waitlist to understand your abilities as well knowledge and experience in tricky avalanche terrain.
On that note, if the avalanche conditions are ill suited for backcountry travel in the vicinity of the hut, we may travel back to vehicles to find safe terrain.
An good level of fitness is required, we will move at a moderate to fast pace. Bushwhacking may happen. Estimated elevation gain will be in the range of 1200 - 1500 each day.
General info about CSMC trips & how to sign up - PLEASE READ:
It is the responsibility of the participant to check for any updates, changes or cancellations before the trip. Gear checks will be conducted at the meet up location. Failure to have the required gear will result in the participant not attending the trip.
An automatic waiting list has been created for this trip. Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. 2017 membership at the time of the event
2. Completion of the waiver
3. Answering the questions
4. Experience for the selected objective
5. Participants must be punctual and have a good RSVP history. Which means they do not constantly change their RSVP statuses, are not regularly late and do not back out last minute.
In order to participate in a CSMC trip, you must have paid for a 2017 membership.
I will consider people for the trip if they have 2016 membership, but may remove anyone who is not a 2017 member at the time of the trip.
Waivers are mandatory for every trip and can be filled out at :
Winter back-country event gear required:
Avi beacon, probe, shovel (absolutely mandatory )!!
Also note that beacon must be at least 3 antennae variety...
ski, boots, poles, skins ( split boards ok. )
toque, warm gloves, googles
dress in layers ( no cotton ) be prepared.
headlamp, bivi sac, med kit
down jacket, helmet optional
Please note that this list is not all-inclusive but at starting point.
For the hostel, it is well equipped with mattresses and cooking gear, heat (maybe) and lighting. Bring a winter sleeping bag (the heater there is a bit flakey) and your food for meals. Comfortable clothes/slippers for the hut is recommended. The hostel is near to the highway and gear will not have to be carried far, and it is easy to make more than 1 trip to haul in gear. I will be bringing a sled to help in this effort. If you have any questions on the accommodations, please message me. One of the requirements for participation is to transfer to me the portion of the cost of hostel booking. I will contact those on the waitlist with the details on this point.
Gettin' old, but can still keep up with the kids these days.
