Moonlight Scramble - Yamnuska (non technical route)

Laurel and Garry will lead you on this adventure. You will take the "normal" descent route up and down (be prepared for a bit of scree bashing.

Normal winter gear (see Winter Gear list in File Section) will be required and although the moon will out, bring a headlamp in case.

You won't need snowshoes but microspikes or crampons may come in handy depending on conditions.

Car to car time will be about 5 hours or so.

    Hey Guys,

My apologies that you guys had to wait for me and that you chose to wait so long!! I honestly wasn't expecting you guys to wait past 1630 and even then, that would be asking a bit much. Also, thank you for the note you left on the windshield wiper, I left a note in return but I guess you guys didn't get it.

I got there just after 1700, saw your note and started running; i could hear a mix of voices most for most of the way. Around 1800 I got to the start of the scramble (past the hands-on-rock bit: chimney (?) and couldn't see or hear anyone. I've done Yam before, but never the scree slope on my own at night with just one headlamp and one reflective arm band, so I gave up trying to find the group & opted for layers & food instead before heading back down. At the parking lot for 1930 & wrote a note; stuck it on the same car, with the light left on.

Sounds like you guys had a great trip. Hope I get another chance to hike with you lot. And again, my apologies!!

Laura, that sucks. It sounds like you were not too far off of our group. We sure gave it our all to try and hold out for you to get there. I even called your emergency contact to try and touch base with you, as that's the only number we had available to us at the Yam parking lot. You're correct, we did not take the chain wall route around the back side, and you were smart in not putting yourself in an unknown solo situation (particularly at night) on a route you had never done before. Intelligent decision. Look forward to seeing you again out there.

I had lots of heart warming moments on this trip, especially when the weather was frigidly cold. :D

Great to meet everyone on the scramble! Beautiful weather and view for the scramble. Enjoy the pictures. Does anyone have an issue if I post some of these pictures on my Facebook page in an album? I hope to see you out on a meetup in the future, until then, stay safe.

Doug, thanks SO MUCH for posting all your photos. My camera settings went south on the summit, so all my pictures from that point onwards were completely blurred! Yes, the wind was rather biting, but hey, it's February in the Rockies. Seriously what does anyone expect? It was amazing weather wise for this time of year. I don't have any problems with you posting shots. If I'm in them, that's fine, tag me.

Note to all: I am out of e-mail range tomorrow from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at a work site, so if you have any immediate concerns, it might be better to contact Garry Shepherd directly, otherwise I'll see everyone at 3:00 PM at Shouldice.

I don't have any problem with dogs as long as they're experienced trail dogs who don't disappear or pose any safety risks to participants. By that I mean that they're good with people or other dogs.

Sorry I won't be able to join you Saturday night. I hoped my injury would improve enough to do this scramble! Have fun!

Are dogs still allowed on the outing?

    February 22, 2013

  • Doug L.

Carpooling...anyone needing a passenger or a ride? I will be coming from Red Deer and have a 3/4 ton Dodge that can fit 6 + all the gear in the covered box. I am willing to drive, or be a passenger in another vehicle.

BTW, if you e-mail me directly at [masked] or phone at[masked], then this probably would be better than posting your address on the forum?

      February 20, 2013

    • Doug L.

Hi Syed. Amber has also asked to participate in our carpool, so I am planning on picking her up on the way to Shouldice after picking you up. When you send me your address to [masked] I will determine approximate pickup times and let you know when to expect me at your place. Ir anyone else would like to partake in this carpool, just send me an email - room for at least 1 more comfortably.

I understand from some people on the confirmed list that they may not be able to attend. Please remove your registration at your earliest convenience so that people on the waiting list can have a chance to attend. Thanks everyone.

    I'll miss the dogs.

As my knee is still in recovery I will not be joining you. Laurel and Garry have agreed to co-ordinate the outing and do what they can to lead you astray :) They will pick a destination in the next couple of days, but you can expect it to be something non technical and about 6 hours car to car. This should get you home before you turn into a pumpkin at midnight :)

    Have fun and play safe.
