What we're about
Our Meetup is for gardeners of all skill levels who are passionate about California native plants. Since 1997, the California Native Plant Demonstration Garden located within the Old City Cemetery on Broadway and Riverside Blvd, has been planting and showcasing California native plants that:
• are drought tolerant and river-friendly
• attract hummingbirds and songbirds
• enhance pollinator foraging
• provide edible and medicinal uses
• create biodiverse backyard habitats, and
• educate and inform visitors on how to incorporate CA natives at home
We're up to over 100 different species of CA native plants (that are from throughout the State) in over 75 plots covering about 3/4 of an acre which you can see along Riverside Blvd. We harvest seeds, propagate plants, weed, prune, plant wildflower seeds and plants, lead tours, host events, oversee restoration, among other things. Don't worry if you don't have many garden tools of your own. Small garden tools are available to borrow if you don't have any. Best of all, you get to take home free plant babies and wildflower seeds as available.
The California Native Plant Demonstration Garden is made possible with the support of the local Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and volunteers. We coordinate our activities with the Old City Cemetery Committee, the City of Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department, and the Sacramento County Sheriff Department Work Crew Program.
We hope to meet up with you soon!
