• Monthly Chapter Mtg - Nov 2018 - Old & New: CA Native Plants @ the UCD Arboretum
Join us this month as Ellen Zagory talks about the wonderful variety of CA native plants growing in the UC Davis Arboretum. We'll learn about the plants that have survived in our hot and dry Central Valley conditions and that work well in the home garden. Ellen is a professional horticulturist with 30 years of experience in cultivating plants for valley gardens. She has a particular interest in California native plants, their relationships to pollinators, and their performance in urban gardens. She recently retired from the position of Director of Public Horticulture for the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden where she provided outreach to media and interested groups on a variety of sustainable gardening topics. MORE INFO: Our meetings are free to attend. A small parking lot and street parking are available. Light snacks are provided and we often have merchandise for sale such as books, t-shirts, greeting cards, and wildflower seeds. See you soon!

  • Nursery Wednesday Workdays
The mission of Elderberry Farms Native Plant Nursery is to promote awareness of the benefits of native plant habitat, encourage community involvement, and provide a source of local native plants for restoration projects as well as gardeners. Join us for propagation work on Wednesdays and help pot up seedlings and learn various propagating techniques under the excellent direction of Robin Rietz, Propagation Manager. We treat volunteers to Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches (you're also welcome to bring your own lunch)! We also work in our demonstration gardens on Wednesdays. These are small sized landscapes that show others how to effectively use native plants in their own landscape. We need the help of community volunteers to maintain them. Please bring gloves and water. Tools and snacks will be provided. Yes, we sell plants during our workdays as time allows between 10:00 and 12:00. If you come to buy plants you are welcome to join our workday :-) We are a growing operation as well as a nursery. We collect seeds and cuttings on our Friday Walks from native plants along the American River Parkway. Then we propagate them at the Nursery.

  • Monthly Chapter Meeting - October 2018 - Plants Need Heros by Jeb Bjerke
As we head into the anthropocene extinction event, who will save California’s native flora for the future? Important preservation and conservation work has been accomplished over the last 150 years, but there is so much more to do. Ongoing habitat destruction, the spread of exotic species, and climate change are all significant threats to our native flora, particularly ahead in the coming decades and centuries. We don’t have much time to save what’s left. Laws, non-government organizations, and regulatory and land management agencies provide some protection, but what rare plants really need are heros. Jeb Bjerke will discuss some of the plants on the brink of extinction in California, and the heros working to save them. Unfortunately there are more plants in need of help than heros to assist them. The challenge of keeping plant species from going extinct in the wild will only become more difficult in our growing modern world. Bio: Jeb Bjerke works as a senior environmental scientist specialist in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Native Plant Program. Jeb is a Sacramento State University alumnus and has worked for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for 10 years. Jeb’s interests include rare plant monitoring, environmental laws affecting native plants, photography, and native gardening. MORE INFO: Our meetings are free to attend. Light snacks are provided and we often have merchandise for sale such as books, t-shirts, greeting cards, and wildflower seeds. See you soon!

  • The Bigly, Anti-Disaster, Non-Horrible Garden Work Party
Happy October, Everyone! I write this as I listen to the last presidential debates - hooooooo boy!! If you're needing a bit of respite from our election season, come on out to the garden this Sunday and let nature help soothe your frayed nerves. We'll plant a few things, transplant a few things, cut back our sages, and more! The weather is expected to be in the low 70's and sunny - a perfect garden day! Maybe we'll even see the cedar waxwings that are migrating back to the valley. Bring garden gloves and a hat. Tools will be available to use. Snacks and beverages provided. Hope to see you soon!
