Let's take advantage of the November long-weekend and go do some photo-hiking in and around Banff. Now.. I can't remember what Banff looks like in early'ish November. I'm hoping that the lakes are still liquid by then (can someone confirm?). That should get us some good reflections!
We'll stay at HI Banff Alpine Centre. I've booked a 6-person dorm room (with bunk beds) for the long weekend (ie., three nights). The total cost will be $57 per person for the entire stay (and you'll pay this online when you RSVP). Actually, I've rounded the cost up to $60 to compensate for online payment fees.
Please note that I (Imran) will pay the Hostel for the accommodations. That's why this event requires payment of the $60 (per person) initially. Once you get to the hostel you won't have to pay them as I'll pay them upon arrival for all of us. (Plus that way we can all take advantage of my HI member rate, even if you yourself aren't HI members) Please note that you can still get a refund for your payment if we cancel or postpone the event or if you decide to change your RSVP to 'Not coming' a minimum of 2 days prior to the event.
Since this is in a National Park, if you don't have a Parks Pass then you may need to pay for entry to it. I will however try to acquire a group pass. (Let me know if you have one!) :)
Do note that I will be bringing my eleven years-old boy with me and Aslinah will most likely bring her nine years old girl as well, so this will be a youth-friendly photo-hiking weekend. So if you have a young one (although not too young) then you can bring them along too. :)
• Sunset at Castle Mountain
• Sunrise at Vermilion Lakes
• Sunrise at Bow Lake
• Possible drive/hike to see sunrise at Floe Lake (one hour drive from the hostel)
• Aurora-photography at Lake Minnewanka
As per usual, we will try to get up early and get to the right places on time to catch sunrise, as well as sunsets. In-between I'm hoping we can try some relatively easy hikes around lakes or up some hills for views. Nothing too crazy. At night we can do some night-sky photography and even some aurora photography by Lake Minnewanka if we are blessed with some northern lights.
We will organize some carpooling as we near the weekend. Do comment on the event and let us know if you need a ride and back or if you are able to give someone a ride and back. Carpool cost to be determined between the passenger and the driver.
Please note that this is November in the mountains, so do dress warmly and bring your winter wear. Any hikes we do will not be avalanche hazard ones so no worries there. We probably won't need snowshoes or ice grippers either.
Everyone is responsible for bringing their own food. Do bring some food to take with you during the day while we are out-and-about. If on a hike we'll stop for a lunch break. Or if we're driving and come across some place interesting we could also buy a lunch. I'm not planning on doing a potluck dinner or something on this trip unless people want to. (So do post a comment if you'd like to. Otherwise.. people can just bring food for themselves.)
More information to come.
