This is a 3 day ski touring outing to Rogers Pass area. The group will be staying at a hostel outside of Golden, BC (the huts at the pass are booked solid) and we will be doing day-trips of various Rogers Pass tours. If conditions are sufficient, the plan is the following tours:
- Lookout Notch, descent to Asulkan valley
- Asulkan Pass or "The Dome" (glacier travel required)
- Bruins Pass
Each is 1200m-1500m of vertical gain, likely sharing trail-breaking duties. It is a complex avalanche terrain area, so each member will have to have full confidence in their ability to assess and set proper trails and handle themselves in avalanche terrain. Also the ski terrain is very difficult, so this is not a good area for beginner backcountry powder enthusiasts. If the group fitness level is sufficient, we may even lap a route for 2 descents.
The hostel is a very simple bunk style, so bring sleeping bags but has electricity and heat (not a ACC hut). Meals (breakfast/dinner) will be prepared at the hostel, which has kitchen facilities and all guests are responsible for their own meals. Bring earplugs.
Sign up to the waitlist and I will contact you to verify your attendance and send you the hostel booking information (I am not pre-booking spots).
Also, if avalanche conditions are bad, obviously the above stated goals will change. There are lots of safe areas to skin the area that are still fun. In addition, since we aren't staying at the pass proper, there is the likelihood that the highway may be closed if avalanche control is taking place and we won't even be able to access the pass for a day or two. We'll find alternate ski areas, or go to Kicking Horse resort.
