New Meetup: Welcome 2011 with Shantaram!

Announcing a new Meetup for Canberra Book Club!

What: Welcome 2011 with Shantaram!

When: Saturday, January 22,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Tilley's Devine Cafe Gallery
Cnr Brigalow & Wattle Sts Lyneham

The presents have been wrapped and opened and all the turkey has been eaten so what else is left to do except get into the might volume called Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

This lengthy tome was selected by the stoic and dedicated members who braved the last meeting of 2010 (or at the very least weren't otherwise engaged in miscellaneous festive activities or waiting 3.5 hours at an airport!). Previous meetings discussed the possibility of selecting a long book for the Christmas break (few felt like digesting 1000+ pages in our regularly timed meetings).

I have done some digging as to the best prices available for the book. If anyone has anything additional to add please post a note for the other members. The prices I could find were:

eBay - $5 and up
Amazon - $20
Kindle - $12.58
Borders - $30
Dymocks - $26
CDWOW.COM.AU - $18 (despite their name they do sell books)

How the club works
As a refresher and for any new member, here is a general overview on how we work:

  • meetings are held every three weeks
  • books are selected at random from a pre-compiled list (see message board for copy). All members are welcome to suggest titles for inclusion. While the book selection is random, if there are any strong feelings against a selected book members have veto right
  • much general discussion of the book and wide ranging other topics are held (i.e. At the end of the day this is meant to be fun and not 5th period English Literature)
  • the club is very democratic and how things work is generally decided by group consensus

I didn't have time to read the book. Can I still come along.
Absolutely. New members who join in-between meetings or current members who simply had too many other things to do are always welcome
