What Is Contra Dancing? An Americanized dance for groups of couples, based on English, Irish, and Scottish country dancing. Dances are built around a few easy-to-learn, basic steps. Beginners are welcome and it is not necessary to come with a partner. The first part of every event includes instruction for those who have never danced before. See this page for more information - scroll down on that page for video links.

A caller teaches each dance, and then to lively music he calls the steps during the dance. Each time through the dance couples move up or down the set so that you are always dancing with different people. Normal protocol is to take a different partner for each dance, so throughout the evening you will meet just about everybody at the dance. We are fortunate to have live music played at our dances.

Dress code: Casual, comfortable, cool and loose. Wear shoes you can pivot in with heels that will not leave a mark on the floor. High heels are *not* recommended.

What kind of people enjoy contra dancing?  Our dancers include people from about 8 to 80 yrs old, and from all walks of life. People who enjoy live music, energetic dancing, and interacting with others in a family-friendly, alcohol-free atmosphere. It's often said that "contra dancing is an amusement park ride that we make for ourselves", so a playful, friendly attitude and a smile will add to your enjoyment. By the end of the evening you will have danced with pretty much everyone there . . .  it's definitely community social dancing!

How often do we have dances?  Year-round, we have dances on the 2nd and 4th TUESDAY of each month, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm with live music by our local band, Box of Chocolates - at 5th Ave United Methodist Church (UMC) at 409 South Fifth in Wilmington, NC- between Church and Nun Streets - plenty of free parking there.  Only $5.

From September through May, we hold ONE SATURDAY NIGHT dance each month (except Dec)Saturday night dances feature out-of-town bands and callers and are held at 5th Ave UMC OR the Hannah Block Community Arts Center at 120 S. 2nd St (corner of 2nd and Orange Streets), Wilmington.  Dances start at 7:30 pm with a newcomers welcome session and the dance runs from 8 - 11 pm.  $10 at the door, $5 for students w/ ID, and $7 for members of CFCD.
