What we're about

Do you enjoy helping others? Do you have few hours to spare once a month or even once a year? Do you want to volunteer but can't find opportunities that fit your schedule? Are you interested in volunteering but can't commit to 20 hours a week for a year for the same organization?

Capital District Volunteers Meetup group is for individuals with a passion for helping others and helping non-profit organizations but who can't or don't want to commit to long-term volunteering. This group will provide a variety of volunteering opportunities to assist different non-profit organizations. Come join us and find a match for your volunteering interests. We will volunteer with local parks, animal shelters, food banks, and other groups.

According to an article in Whole Living magazine, "studies show that those who volunteer report better mental health than those won't don't." (Nov. 2010)

"Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one's ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them" --Harriet Naylor

Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society recycling/fundraising project

Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society

We help the shelter with their ongoing fundraiser....bottle recycling at their animal shelter in Menands every third Sat morning of the month! Our job is to simply sort piles of recyclables by brand and size and put them in appropriate bins. It's a simple task and you can work at your own speed or capability....work fast or slow....put in whatever time you can. I think you will find it extremely rewarding and the time flies by. Fun way to socialize as well! If you are the first one there, or maybe the only one there that day, simply enter the smaller building on your right past the parking lot. You might hear some great music coming from within!!! Someone should be inside the building and will let you know what to do. Look for Paul or Joe. This used to be an outdoor project but luckily this has changed and will no longer affect our work!!! While we will not be interacting directly with the animals, we are lucky enough to be able to visit them inside or watch them getting taken for their walks. I am afraid I cannot make it sometimes as I live farther away now, but please do not let that deter you from going to this amazing opportunity to help the humane society out. . Gloves will be provided. If possible we use this opportunity to have one or two of our volunteers sit and pull off the pull tabs for OUR ongoing commitment to donate flip tops to Ronald McDonald House. If this day does not work for you, you can go pretty much anytime...almost always sorting to do! If you are looking to volunteer there more often they are always looking for individuals who can commit to a regular time slot. Dog and cat care volunteers commit to a regular 3 hour weekly shift for a minimum of three months. They rely on these kind of volunteers to support staff with daily animal care so that is why it's more of a commitment. If you are able to undertake this kind of individual commitment, go to their website below where you can read more about the different positions and sign up: http://www.mohawkhumane.org/volunteer-faq.html

Stars for our Troops Star Party in Cohoes, NY

Cohoes Waterford Elks

"I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” StarsForOurTroops.org Join us as we cut and pouch embroidered Stars from retired American Flags to let our current service members, veterans, and first responders know that they are not forgotten. This is a great community service project and can be done by all ages and abilities. You do not need to bring any supplies with you to join us. It is fun to bring a friend or two and join us for a great time working together for a good cause. We have been having hot dogs and soda. Other snack contributions are welcomed to share. If you have any 3'x5' American flags with embroidered Stars that are ready for retirement, we can always use them. Information on Stars for our Troops can be found on the website at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or https://www.facebook.com/StarsforourTroops/.
