Hike: AT: White Oak Rd. to Turners Gap, MD PATC Map 5-6 / MD Bus

  • Jun 22, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

$25 (non-members $28) + park fee/pass.

Long hike: 10.2 mi., 2300 ft. ascent, 2000 ft. descent. Short hike: 5.3 mi., 1400 ft. ascent, 900 ft. descent.

It’s the first day of summer – an ideal time for an Appalachian Trail reverie along the crest of South Mtn. After reaching the AT on the Thurston Griggs Trail from White Oak Rd. on the west side of the mountain, we’ll head southbound, pausing at the overlooks at Black Rock and Annapolis Rock. Short hike ends at Rt. 40; long hikers continue through Washington Monument State Park (another great view!) to finish at Turners Gap.

Leaders: Joe Kolb[masked]--0394 and Claudia Seelig[masked]--3216

In addition to RSVP'ing here, email hike leaders directly to reserve a spot on the bus for this hike. Please do not send text messages, as this may delay confirming your seat on the bus.

And remember, if you are confirmed for a seat on the bus, please cancel your reservation with the hike leader if your plans change or you are unable to attend so that someone else can make a reservation in your place.

For additional details, see www.capitalhikingclub.org

Maryland Bus: Bus leaves from 16th and I Streets, NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP (VERY limited parking). Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time.

Additional pick-up points are as follows: Wisconsin Avenue and Woodley Road Friendship Heights Metro, Western Ave, Exit Bethesda Metro (by reservation only) Grosvenor Metro.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.
