It’s become a Capital tradition in the first week to December – a trip to Harpers Ferry for hiking, history and holiday atmosphere. Today’s hiking options include a choice of morning hikes to Maryland Heights Overlook with its picture-postcard view of the historic town of Harpers Ferry. The easier afternoon hike is a loop from the park Visitor Center to Murphy-Chambers Farm, site of a bloody Civil War battle. It’s a new destination for us, and features a stunning view of the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge. In between the hikes, we’ll lunch in Harpers Ferry where, if you opt out of the p.m. hike, you can hang out for shopping, visiting museums and absorbing holiday ambiance.
Leaders: Stephanie Allgaier (sallgaier<at>gmail.com) and Alberto D. 202/[masked]
**NOTE: Meetup has disabled the waitlist feature where members can be notified that a spot has opened for a full hike. You will need to check back on the event's page throughout the week to see if spots are available and RSVP.**
Please RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup. You only need to call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.
However, if you are a first-time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus. If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.
If, after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 2:00 p.m., the day before the hike, BOTH:
1) Change your RSVP to "No"--AND--2) Email your request to [masked].
List the DATE YOU PAID and your FULL NAME.
Please note: There is a $5 cancellation fee per seat on the bus.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.
If contacting hike leaders during the week of the hike, please place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please cancel as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.
Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.
Liability: By RSVPing for a CHC hike, you are acknowledging and accepting that hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers are expected to be able to keep a 2 mph pace.
(Optional) Membership Dues $10.00 per year. Click the "Member dues" link (on the left side of this page) to pay the $10 annual dues to support the Capital Hiking Club. Dues help pay for the administrative and web costs of running the club, and you will also benefit from a reduced rate for club hikes.
If the hike is listed as full and your 6 month free trial of the Capital Hiking Club membership has expired, Meetup may prompt you to pay the membership dues. If you choose to pay the membership, you are still not guaranteed a spot on the hike: you can only get a spot on the hike if one opens up. Dues are non-refundable.
