$26. Long hike: 13½ mi., 2700 ft. ascent, 2800 ft. descent. Moderate hike: 9½ mi., 1900 ft. ascent, 2000 ft. descent.

There’s a plethora of hiking and rugged Massanutten Mtn. scenery in the Elizabeth Furnace area of George Washington National Forest, and the dog days of August are an ideal time to experience both. Our hike starts on idyllic Fort Valley Rd., with a climb on the Veach Gap Trail to Veach Gap. There we’ll meet the Massanutten Trail and follow it north for great views before descending on the Sherman Gap and Botts Trails to Elizabeth Furnace. Long hikers add a 4-mile loop on the Mudhole Gap, Sidewinder, Tuscarora, and Bear Wallow Trails, (Sorry, it’s not possible to hike the 4-mile loop only; you must do it after the 9 ½-mile route.)

Leaders: Eleanor and Ellen B

Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Reservations are accepted as late as Friday, but reserving before Wednesday evening helps ensure your seat on the bus and prevent cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups. The only way to RSVP and pay is through Meetup. Please make sure your RSVP tells us your full name and phone number and where you'll be boarding the bus. We don't want to leave you behind!

If you're a first-time hiker with us, please let the leaders know in advance so they can make sure you know where to meet the bus. Hikers need to be able to keep at least a 2 mph pace.

Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before times listed below. All departure points are Metro accessible. If you're driving to meet the bus, we strongly advise using the Vienna departure point, as parking is extremely limited at the others. Departure points and times are as follows:
—— DC: Southeast corner of 16th and I St. NW (http://bit.ly/16thandEye), bus leaves at 8 a.m. SHARP. 16th and I is near the Farragut West, Farragut North, and McPherson Square Metro stations.
—— ROSSLYN: Key Bridge Marriott Hotel bus stop (http://bit.ly/RosslynMarriot) at approximately 8:10 a.m. The stop is on Route 29 (Lee Highway) at the local Metro bus stop, NOT directly in front of the hotel. The bus will very briefly stop at the curb to pick up hikers.
—— VIENNA METRO: NORTH parking lot (http://bit.ly/vienna-bus), last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m. Note: There is a "south" parking lot where there are also bus shelters. If by 8:15, you're not with a group of hikers who say they're Capital Hiking Club, you're likely at the south lot. There's a walkway over I-66 to the north lot.

Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a pack along with individual first aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It's recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked, and more in hot weather. Gatorade or other electrolyte drink is also advisable. ... Also bring cash for post-hike refreshments!

By RSVP'ing for a CHC hike, you're acknowledging and accepting that hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or club activities. Participants will be asked to sign a waiver the day of the hike.

If you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 2 p.m. the day before the hike,
1) Change your RSVP to "No"
2) Email your request to [masked] .
List the DATE YOU PAID and your FULL NAME.
There's a $5 cancellation fee per seat canceled.
