• Go Hack Night
Come along and get hands-on with some Go code! Feel free to bring suggestions of the kind of problems you'd want to look into, open Pull Request to suggest them ahead of time or just browse through project and talk ideas here: https://github.com/golang-cymru/cardiff-meetup-code This evening is an opportunity for us to kick off/continue work on some longer running projects that we may want to work on as a group across a series of hack nights. But even if you have no experience with Go and want help getting set up or finding training materials please feel free to come along - code contribution is not required! We hope this will allow people of all skill levels and familiarity with Go to participate/learn/share more about the language as well as different approaches. Agenda: [masked]pm - Arrive - Beer & Pizza[masked]pm - Discuss topics and split into groups[masked]pm - First half coding[masked] - Optional half time break[masked]pm - Second half coding[masked]pm - Present and discuss progress TramshedTech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) are our awesome hosts for the evening! If you're looking for co-working space in Cardiff it's a good way to get a feel for what they have going on. Methods (https://methodsdigital.co.uk/) are sponsoring our use of Tramshed as well as our coding fuel (beer & pizza!) so massive thanks to them! If you want to know a bit more about what Methods do, have a chat to Eleanor Deal (https://twitter.com/unoxymoronic) on the night.

  • What I've Learned from Go kit
Ross McFarlane will be joining us to talk about Go kit! Go kit (https://github.com/go-kit/kit) is a microservices toolkit for Go. It provides some useful tools for building RPC-ish services in a modern environment, and gently encourages sensible architecture. In this talk, I'm going to introduce Go kit by building a simple service (live demo!), and discuss some of the ways Go kit has taught me to write better Go. About Ross (https://twitter.com/rossmcf): I've been working with Go for a couple of years now, in a mixture of environments. I've put a handful of Go kit services into production, and have made a couple of contributions to the Go kit project. I've recently joined Form3 Financial Cloud. Additionally, slots will be available for lightning talks if you'd like to practise a presentation, try out some ideas or share something you've been working on recently. Lightning talks should be kept to 5 minutes or less. There's no need to reserve a slot for these talks, but if you'd like to discuss it please reach out! Agenda: 6.00pm - 6:30pm: Beer & Pizza 6:30pm - 7:00pm: What I've Learned from Go kit - Ross McFarlane[masked]pm: Break/Change over[masked]pm: Lightning talks 8pm onwards: More beer and socializing TramshedTech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) are once again our awesome hosts for the evening! • Go Hacktoberfest
For October we're changing our hack night format slightly to encourage participation in Hacktoberfest (https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/). Hacktoberfest is a month long celebration run by Github and Digital Ocean to encourage participation in open source projects - opening 4 PRs against public repos will qualify you for a Hacktoberfest Tshirt at the end of the month. If you sign up to Github and Hacktoberfest before the meetup, we'll be able to get down to coding that much sooner! We'll point out some repos which are looking for contributors, and assist anyone who is new to Github or open source contribution. The Go project itself also has a list of beginner friendly issues, and we'll be able to help people nervous about making their first contribution. For those not interested in Hacktoberfest, it's also an opportunity for us to kick off some longer running projects that we may want to work on as a group across a series of hack nights. We have a place for project proposals here: https://github.com/golang-cymru/cardiff-meetup-code We hope this will allow people of all skill levels and familiarity with Go to participate/learn/share more about the language as well as different approaches. Agenda: [masked]pm - Arrive - Beer & Pizza[masked]pm - Intro to Hacktoberfest, suggest issues and split into groups[masked]pm - First half coding[masked] - Optional half time break[masked]pm - Second half coding[masked]pm - Present and discuss progress TramshedTech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) are our awesome hosts for the evening! • Gophercon roundup
Now that videos are out for Gophercon UK and Gophercon, lets get together and hear from people who were able to attend or have seen the videos about what talks they'd recommend, and discuss some of the topics raised at the conferences. This will likely include, based on a group vote, watching at least one of the videos jointly and then discussing that particular topic. And because meetup doesn't allow links anymore... • go-ns - Go's role in publishing data at the Office for National Statistics
Eleanor Deal (https://twitter.com/unoxymoronic) will present a case study into the use of Go at the Office for National Statistics. Using Go we've rebuilt how data gets prepared, a pipeline for custom queries and extended our go-ns library - learning more about the practical sides of Go. Additionally, slots will be available for lightning talks if you'd like to practise a presentation, try out some ideas or share something you've been working on recently. • Go/Raspberry Pi Hack Night
Come along and get hands-on with some Go code on a Raspberry Pi! Using libraries like Gobot (https://gobot.io/documentation/platforms/raspi/) we're going to spend the evening working in groups to bring Go and Raspberry Pis together to tackle new challenges. If you have a Pi or any other devices/components you think people might be interested in hacking with, please bring them along! Lights, buttons, buzzers, anything! If you dont have a Raspberry Pi, don't worry! Just bring suggestions of the kind of problems you'd want to look into, and team up with other community members on the night. Agenda: [masked]pm - Arrive - Beer & Pizza - Suggest problems[masked]pm - Vote on problem(s) and split into groups[masked]pm - First half coding[masked] - Optional half time break[masked]pm - Second half coding[masked]pm - Present and discuss group solutions TramshedTech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) are our awesome hosts for the evening! • Open Hack Night
Come along and get hands-on with some Go code! Bring suggestions of the kind of problems you'd want to look into, and feel free to prepare some code for others to work from/help you with. As always, we will follow (roughly) the style of the London Python Dojo (http://ntoll.org/article/how-to-run-an-awesome-code-dojo)- voting on a problem to tackle whilst people arrive, spending the evening working in small groups to solve the problem together and presenting solutions at the end. We hope this will allow people of all skill levels and familiarity with Go to participate/learn/share more about the language as well as different approaches. Agenda: [masked]pm - Arrive - Beer & Pizza - Suggest problems[masked]pm - Vote on problem(s) and split into groups[masked]pm - First half coding[masked] - Optional half time break[masked]pm - Second half coding[masked]pm - Present and discuss group solutions TramshedTech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) are our awesome hosts for the evening!
