• Cardiff SEO Meet #10 - Nov 2018
New venue (again)! This time we're at Milk & Sugar (https://www.milkandsugarplease.com/) at the Old Library on the Hayes in the heart of Cardiff city centre. SPEAKERS Order TBC... "Developing Personas for Customer Usability and Search Performance" Russell O'Sullivan, Digital Thrive (https://www.digitalthrive.co.uk/) Personas are nothing new, they have been talked about and developed over and over for many years, but how many brands or agencies actually use them? In today's multi-device, touchpoint, channel world, it's more important than ever to develop your site and content for the right audience. In this talk, Russell will go through an example of how he helped develop Customer Profiles and Audience Personas for a global brand, the frustrations in user testing, how it was implemented (merging 57 different country websites - which were pretty much all different versions under one brand - eek!) and the search engine successes! Plus he will happily send a PDF version of the Persona document to you for FREE! From the organiser: Russell's background in digital is impressive, having worked in-house at companies including Confused.com, Roland UK, Legal & General and Lloyds Banking Group. More recently he's gone freelance as a digital marketing consultant & strategist. I've wanted a talk on personas at Cardiff SEO Meet for a while so this is absolutely perfect. "How To Achieve 'Position 0'" Kali Mason, Confused.com (https://www.confused.com/) The info box at the top of Google search results is a mystery to some, but even small things implemented across your site can help you toward gaining that lucrative "position 0". By utilising rich snippets and schema, this talk will show you practical steps towards achieving the new top spot, including some case studies. From the organiser: Having previously worked under the Google Digital Garage initiative, Kali now works at Confused.com. They're an experienced SEO and I'm really excited to have a talk all about Google's featured snippets. LIVE SITE REVIEW As usual, we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. SISTRIX (https://www.sistrix.com/) is our site review sponsor, so we'll be using their toolset to help us analyse the volunteered site and find some 'quick wins'! FREE FOOD & DRINK Milk & Sugar will be providing us with a yummy homemade curry, while there'll be some free bottles of Becks lying around (provided by SISTRIX - German lager from the German sponsor)! Milk & Sugar has a bar, so if lager isn't your thing then don't worry, you're good to grab something else! If you have any dietary requirements beyond vegetarian then please let us know ASAP, ideally no later than the Monday beforehand at the latest. You can message us (via Meetup) or drop a comment below. Once again a big thank you to our sponsors, who cover the cost of the free food & drink: Ghost Marketing - https://ghostmarketing.co.uk/ Traffic Jam Media - https://trafficjammedia.co/ Escentual - https://www.escentual.com/ Red Squirrel Marketing - https://www.nutsaboutmarketing.com/ SISTRIX - https://www.sistrix.com/ Also a big thank you to our website sponsor Xanthe Studios (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/ - Cardiff SEO Meet website coming very soon) and photo/video sponsor GSD Media UK (https://gsdmediauk.com/). SISTRIX WORKSHOP(?) Ahead of the last meetup, SISTRIX (the site review sponsor) ran a workshop during the day of the meetup, where you could learn how to use their toolset. I'm not sure if they'll be doing the same thing again this time (in which case it'd be taking place in the afternoon before this evening meetup), but if they do, I'll update this page and/or leave a comment below with info. You can also check this page (and sign up for notifications) in the meantime: https://www.sistrix.com/seminar/toolbox/cardiff/

  • Cardiff SEO Meet #9 - Sep 2018
Following the Bierkeller's sudden closure, we've had to change venues again, so we're back at our previous home - Tramshed Tech - for this one. We'll be in the Innovation Studio, not the main Workspace area. Please enter via the main entrance (the one that leads into the Workspace), let the staff know that you're attending the SEO meetup and they will direct you to the room. The room only has a capacity of 60, so we've disabled +1's this time. So if you know someone who'd like to attend then they'll have to join Meetup.com and book their spot themselves - it's easy to do and only takes 2 mins. SPEAKERS "Local SEO - 10 things you should be doing but might not be, and 5 things you might be doing and you should stop (right now)" Claire Carlile, Claire Carlile Marketing (https://www.clairecarlilemarketing.com/) The concept of 'local search' is more important (and talked about) than ever - mobile first, entity first and voice search are changing how people search and what results they're served. In this talk, Claire covers the changing search landscape and details 10 key tactics for local SEO success, and 5 that you really shouldn't be using. Ever. From the organiser: Our first Local SEO talk! Claire has been a long-term supporter of Cardiff SEO Meet, coming to multiple meetups (even trekking it in from Pembrokeshire every time!) so we're delighted to have her speak. "Everything you think about your analytics is probably wrong" Russell McAthy, CUBED (http://cubed.ai/) It has become cool to be data driven. The use of smart analytics is allowing brands to drive improvements in their marketing activity without the need for guesswork. In this talk Russell will go through a number of ways that brands are using data and show where they are not always seeing the full picture. This will range from the basics like conversion rate through to his topic of expertise and passion, marketing attribution! Come to this talk to learn more about the mistakes even big brands are making and ensure that you’re set for an accurate and actionable analytics led future! From the organiser: Attribution is such an important topic. What if you're incorrectly attributing your business' conversions? Or what if SEO is doing better for you than you realise? Russell is a renowned speaker on the subject, regularly speaking at conferences worldwide - so we're in for a treat. LIVE SITE REVIEW As usual, we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. Should be good! This time we have a site review sponsor: SISTRIX (https://www.sistrix.com/)! We'll be using their toolset to help us analyse the volunteered site and find 'quick wins'! FREE FOOD & DRINK We're going to hire a caterer or do a big pizza order (TBC) ahead of the event. If you have any dietary requirements beyond vegetarian then please let us know ASAP, ideally no later than a week beforehand. You can message us (via Meetup) or drop a comment below. Once again a big thank you to our sponsors, who cover the cost of the free food & drink: Ghost Marketing - https://ghostmarketing.co.uk/ Traffic Jam Media - https://trafficjammedia.co/ Escentual - https://www.escentual.com/ Red Squirrel Marketing - https://www.nutsaboutmarketing.com/ SISTRIX - https://www.sistrix.com/ And a big thank you to our website sponsor Xanthe Studios (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/ - Cardiff SEO Meet website coming soon) and photo/video sponsor GSD Media UK (https://gsdmediauk.com/). SISTRIX WORKSHOP SISTRIX have booked a workshop at Tramshed Tech during the day of the meetup, where you can learn how to use their toolset. It's free to attend. They've set up their own Meetup.com group (https://www.meetup.com/Cardiff-SEO-learn-and-meet-with-SISTRIX/) for the occasion. I'll post a comment below with a link to the specific event page once they've created it.

  • Cardiff SEO Meet #8 - July 2018
We're back at Cardiff Bierkeller for another meetup! Info below... SPEAKERS "Ready, Aim, FIRE! Fast & Accurate SEO reporting and diagnostics with Google Analytics" Emma Barnes, Branded3 (https://www.branded3.com/) This talk will be a 20-minute intro to how to ensure what you're reporting on is accurate, how to do it quickly (so you can spend more time doing SEO and less time reporting) and how to use Google Analytics to help diagnose problems and opportunities for SEO. From the organiser: I adore Emma. She's a Senior Analytics Analyst at one of the most highly-regarded SEO agencies in the UK, so she knows her stuff without a doubt. We haven't had a dedicated Google Analytics talk since the very first Cardiff SEO Meet, so I'm really excited about what Emma has in store for us. "Get a Super-fast SEO Optimised Website (for a fraction of the price you would pay developers)" Nick Brown, Accelerate Agency (https://www.accelerate-agency.com/) A real life example... How I got BookingLive to #1 for highly competitive keywords such as "booking system", "online booking system" & "booking software" by simply building a new WordPress site and how I did it on a very tight budget. Increased traffic by 170%, average sale value by 70% and conversions by 40%. Learn how to do it yourself (for a very low cost)! I'll also throw in a quick LinkedIn tactic I used to grow my LinkedIn connections from 300 to nearly 30,000, which has helped my brand and its site-wide SEO. From the organiser: Who doesn't love a case study?! Having met Nick a few times at a few different events and seen how open and transparent he can be about his work, it looks as though there could be a lot of take-aways from this one. Get your notepads at the ready, folks... LIVE SITE REVIEW As usual, we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. Should be good! FREE FOOD Bierkeller are going to put on a buffet for us and will include vegetarian options, as well as gluten-free and vegan options upon request. So if you have any dietary requirements beyond vegetarian then please let us know, ideally by the Friday beforehand (13th July) at the latest please. You should be able to message me via Meetup. I might (might!) be able to wrangle some free drink vouchers as well - but no promises, ok? Once again a big thank you to our sponsors, who cover the cost of the free food: Ghost Marketing - https://ghostmarketing.co.uk/ Traffic Jam Media - https://trafficjammedia.co/ Escentual - https://www.escentual.com/ Red Squirrel Marketing - https://www.nutsaboutmarketing.com/ And a big thank you to our new website sponsor Xanthe Studios (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/ - Cardiff SEO Meet website coming soon) and photo/video sponsor GSD Media UK (https://gsdmediauk.com/).

  • Cardiff SEO Meet #7 - Mar 2018 *New Date*
This is a rescheduling of the Thursday 1st March event that got snowed off. Please note that it's on a Wednesday evening (rather than the usual Thursday evening). We decided to 'reset' RSVPs (instead of carrying them across) as inevitably some people may not be able to make the new date, so it made sense to start from scratch. New Year, new venue! This is our first event at our new venue: Bierkeller's Sports Bar (a.k.a. Shooters). SPEAKERS Here are the speakers for this event (running order TBC): "All About The Links" Rhydian Ball, Compare My Move (https://www.comparemymove.com/) This talk will aim to give you some honest and practical takeaways based on some tactics and tools I use to get links without big budgets. Links will always be an important part of SEO, but with so much advice out there, how can small business owners build links to help their SEO efforts? In my talk I'll aim to cut through the noise and show you some easy ways to build some links. From the organiser: I don't think we've ever had a full-on link building talk at Cardiff SEO Meet before, so a talk of this nature is long overdue - and I'm excited about what Rhydian has in store for us. "How To Use Cognitive Biases In Ecommerce To Increase Your Conversion Rate" Francesca Irving, Lunax Digital (https://lunaxdigital.co.uk/) In this talk you will learn: - The definition of cognitive bias - All about the role of cognitive biases in ecommerce - About a selection of the most important cognitive biases and how we can apply each one to ecommerce - The difference between converting an ecommerce prospect and a service-based business prospect From the organiser: Not an SEO talk per se, but still hugely important topic to SEOs and digital marketers. You'll see that Francesca has set up and run a few ecommerce store sites - such as MyMatcha (https://www.mymatchaskinnytea.com/) & Magnetize Lashes (https://magnetizelashes.com/) - so in addition to CRO and web psychology, I imagine there'd be some entrepreneurial takeaways as well, for those of us looking at making a side-income (or perhaps a main income!) from online stores. LIVE SITE REVIEW As usual, we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! Usually we'd say "we'll announce who it is a few days before" but we've already announced who it was supposed to be (before the 1st March date got cancelled). It's the same website that we announced in late Feb - so if you're a member of the Meetup group then you should already have the link(s). Bierkeller's Sports Bar now only has an enormous main screen but also has small screens dotted around the bar, so hopefully it'll be easier for the audience to follow what's going on on-screen. FOOD & DRINK Bierkeller are going to put on a buffet for us and are going to try and include gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. If you have any dietary requirements then please let me know (including those listed above, just in case we get a lot of requests for a certain type) - ideally by the Friday beforehand (23rd March) at the latest please. You should be able to message me via Meetup. We're also hoping to sort out drink vouchers (one per attendee) - but at the very least, there should be some free food! Once again a big thank you to our sponsors, who cover the cost of the free food: Ghost Marketing - https://ghostmarketing.co.uk/ Xanthe Studios - https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/ Traffic Jam Media - http://trafficjammedia.co/ Made Clear - https://www.madeclearuk.com/ Escentual - https://www.escentual.com/

Following our hiatus in August, we're back with two great talks - one about PR, one about content - and a live site review. Plus the usual food, drink and networking at our fab venue: Tramshed Tech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/). Speakers Here are the speakers for this event (running order TBC): James Davies, Compass Media Relations (http://www.compassmr.co.uk/) (@compass_James (https://twitter.com/compass_James)) PR & SEO: It's Complicated Historically, PR and SEO are two different schools; two schools that have moved closer together during recent times. As SEO looks to shade its tag as a dark art, whilst PR continues to battle for dominance in a world of online content, how can both disciplines utilise one another? From the organiser: I've worked alongside James on a number of projects and he is one of the few PRs locally who 'gets' the SEO side of PR, i.e. trying to get that coveted inbound link. Think of this as a 'what a PR can teach SEOs about PR' type talk. Not sure about that "dark art" comment though... ;-) Emily Bater, Admiral Insurance (https://www.admiral.com/) Why You're Overthinking Your Website Content Emily will take you through the starting points for a content plan and content ideas that are engaging, and share her tips for how you can improve your content. From the organiser: Formerly of Gocompare.com and Boma Camp (a Welsh ICE project), Emily has a wealth of experience on the content front, having just joined the Admiral team in a Content Editor role. Given that us SEOs can often get too busy thinking about keywords when it comes to crafting content, it'll be really good to get Emily's views on creating content that people find useful and enjoyable while still ticking the SEO box. Live site review As usual, we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. Should be good! First the first time as well, we might be having a 'guest chair' leading this session. Once confirmed we'll be sure to announce who it is, and - if it goes well - then we might have a guest chair lead all of these sessions going forward (possibly someone different every time, to keep things interesting). Food & Drink! A big thank you to everyone who filled out our food & drink survey a while back. This time we're gonna keep it simple with a mahoosive pizza order, and I'll try my best to cover as many dietary requirements as possible (gluten, vegetarian, etc.). If there's any problems or if you have any particular requests then please don't hesitate to ask - as a food intolerance sufferer myself, there's nothing worse than going to an event with food and not being able to eat anything, so I completely understand. You should be able to message me through Meetup. Beer, wine* and soft drinks will also be available. * Given that the event coincides with Beaujolais Day, we're thinking of getting a variety of wine especially. What do you think? A big thank you to our food & drink sponsors: Ghost Marketing - ghostmarketing.co.uk (https://ghostmarketing.co.uk/) Xanthe Studios - xanthestudios.co.uk (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/) Traffic Jam Media - trafficjammedia.co (http://trafficjammedia.co/) Made Clear - madeclearuk.com (https://www.madeclearuk.com/) Escentual - escentual.com (https://www.escentual.com/)

Our 5th event marks our 1st anniversary! Thank you for all your support this past year. We're back at Tramshed Tech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/) for this one, after great feedback about the venue at the last event. Speakers Here are the speakers for this event: Sharon Flaherty, BrandContent (http://brandcontent.co.uk/) (@ContentPRlover (https://twitter.com/ContentPRlover)) Google Home is here, but what does it mean for your SEO strategy? Google Home is now available to buy in the UK and as digital marketers, we need to consider what impact Google Home will have on search. How does Google Home decide on which answers to give? What does it mean for SEO strategies and current approaches? In this talk, we'll showcase the new Google Home device and draw some conclusions. Joe Tannorella, Admiral Group plc (https://admiralgroup.co.uk/) & UIDB.io (https://uidb.io/) (@JoeTannorella (https://twitter.com/JoeTannorella)) Outreaching to Richard Branson In 2014 Joe successfully outreached to Richard Branson using the mini-site dearsirrichard.com (http://www.dearsirrichard.com/). In this talk Joe runs us through how he did it, the effort he went through, why it worked, and gives us a few lessons learned in how to outreach. Live Site Review Following on from previous site reviews (Learnium, Xanthe Studios and Letterbox Lab), we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. Should be good! Food & Drink! Like last time, we're arranging for a caterer to provide food for the event and they've asked us to let them know if anyone has any gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or any other dietary requirements. Please message us via the Meetup group if that applies to you and we'll let them know - please do so no later than Mon 15th (3 days before the event). There'll be some vegetarian options available anyway, so only let us know if you're vegan specifically. It's a finger food buffet, so you may want to grab a meal before you arrive anyway - just a heads-up. Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available. A big thank you to our food & drink sponsors: HQ SEO - hqseo.co.uk (http://hqseo.co.uk/) Xanthe Studios - xanthestudios.co.uk (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/) All Things Web® - allthingsweb.co.uk (https://www.allthingsweb.co.uk/) Traffic Jam Media - trafficjammedia.co (http://trafficjammedia.co/)

Happy New Year! We're delighted to be at a new venue (the incredible Tramshed Tech (http://tramshedtech.net/en/home-page/)) for our first event of 2017. This time we're trying something different... Rather than getting dedicated SEOs and other online marketing specialists to talk to you about a particular topic, this time we have two brilliant and inspirational Cardiff-based entrepreneurs telling you their stories, talking about how they have grown their businesses using SEO and other tactics. The event's speakers (in order): Grace Quantock, GraceQuantock.com (http://gracequantock.com/) & Healing Boxes (http://healing-boxes.com/) (@Grace_Quantock (https://twitter.com/Grace_Quantock)) Why YOU are your business' biggest asset I began my business with intention - that illness doesn't have to mean the end of dreams, instead we carve our own path and blaze a trail - and I learnt to run the business along the way. I have drawn my strengths and experience to build my core message, sustainability and resilience, into the very bones of my business and I run two award-winning international companies, as a result. Addition from Steve: Grace has done well utilising SEO, social media, traditional media, and even unusual business card designs, as well as by being diligent with client follow-up and simply being helpful and kind. Aimee Bateman, Careercake.com (https://www.careercake.com/) (@Aimee_Bateman (https://twitter.com/Aimee_Bateman)) 5 Ways to Build a Great Brand Using YouTube - The Careercake Story If you're a fan of video marketing (especially via YouTube) then this one is for you. Aimee Bateman, CEO/Founder of Careercake.com, started out by buying a second-hand camera from eBay and making YouTube videos in her lounge. Today, Careercake.com is an award-winning online learning platform, delivering on-demand courses dedicated to helping people thrive their career. With customers around the world, the success of Careercake.com would not have been possible without video marketing. Live Site Review Following on from Learnium's and Xanthe Studio's site reviews (you can watch Learnium's here (https://www.periscope.tv/CardiffSEOMeet/1BdxYVZldazKX)), we will be analysing and auditing a volunteered website live on the night! We have our willing volunteer lined up - a few days beforehand we'll announce who it is so that you can research them beforehand if you like. Should be good! UPDATE: It's Letterbox Lab (www.letterboxlab.com (https://www.letterboxlab.com/))! Food & Drink! We're arranging for a caterer to provide food for the event and they've asked us to let them know if anyone has any gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan or any other dietary requirements. Please message us via the Meetup group if that applies to you and we'll let them know - please do so no later than Mon 13th (3 days before the event). There'll be some vegetarian options available anyway, so only let us know if you're vegan specifically. It's a finger food buffet, so you may want to grab a meal before you arrive anyway - just a heads-up. UPDATE: Final numbers and dietary requirements now confirmed! Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available. • Cardiff SEO Meet #3 (& Early Xmas Social) - Nov 2016
Like last time, we have two talks and a site review for you, with some very interesting talks lined up (especially Tom's, given the fairly controversial topic...)! Plus, as a bonus, we have a lighting talk right at the end. And given that it'll be the last meetup before Christmas, we'll treat it as a (fairly early) Xmas social, too... Please note the slightly earlier start time this time (doors 6:15pm, first speaker on at c. 6:30pm). The event's speakers (running order TBC): Tom Buckland, HQ SEO (http://hqseo.co.uk/) (@tombucklandseo (https://twitter.com/tombucklandseo)) Black Hat SEO Basics - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Black-hat SEO is one of the biggest misunderstood topics in digital marketing. In this talk I aim to explain when these techniques can be used, when to avoid them, what they are and more of the basics associated with this dark art. Miranda Bishop, Talking Social Media (http://mirandabishop.com/) & Re:Program (http://www.re-program.co.uk/) (@Miranda_Bishop (https://twitter.com/Miranda_Bishop)) Social Currency - Why Won't People Share My Content? Miranda's talk is all about getting true buy-in through social media and generating advocacy to help drive traffic. Site Review Following on from our site review of Learnium at the last meetup, we'll be doing another live site review, where we (as the audience) will take a look at a website and give SEO advice and make suggestions there and then. The site has been announced and it's Xanthe Studios (www.xanthestudios.co.uk (https://www.xanthestudios.co.uk/)). Feel free to conduct your own research and analysis beforehand (should you wish to), ready to discuss and advise on the night. Note: This time, the volunteer has kindly requested that the site review is not Periscoped - so if you want to see it for yourself then you'd best come along...! Steve Morgan, Morgan Online Marketing & Cardiff SEO Meet (@steviephil (https://twitter.com/steviephil)) Lightning Talk - The History of SEO in 5 Minutes (or Less)... As the organiser of Cardiff SEO Meet, I told myself that I'd never put myself on as a speaker, however I've had an idea for a fun lightning/Ignite-style talk: 20 slides in 5 minutes (therefore 15 seconds per slide), which automatically rotate - if you've ever been to Ignite Cardiff, you'll know the drill. However there's a slight twist... I'm raising money for my chosen charity (Climb (http://www.childrenshospitalchallenge.co.uk/who-are-climb/)), and for every £25 raised, I'll shave 1 second off the slide times. That may not sound like much, but that's 20 seconds for every £25, and a whole minute if we hit £75!* In other words, the more money we raise, the more challenging it'll become, the faster I'll have to talk, the more I'll struggle, and the sillier I'll look (and who doesn't want that?!). Here's the JustGiving page (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/steviephil) - please donate generously! :-) * Up to a maximum of £150 (6 seconds per slide, 2 mins shaved off overall). If we go over £150, I'll throw in additional challenges to make it harder/sillier/funnier.

Following on from our very first meetup in May, we have two talks and a site review for you this time... The event's speakers: Andrew Isidoro, Gocompare.com (http://www.gocompare.com/) (@Andrew_Isidoro (https://twitter.com/Andrew_Isidoro)) Technical SEO FTW! Links, links, links. That's all anyone seems to care about nowadays. In his talk, Andrew hopes to get back to the real SEO roots, show you how technical SEO can drive organic performance, and give some actionable tips on how to get your site up to scratch. Sara Jones, One Eyed Cat (http://oneeyedcat.com/) (@oneeyedcat_ltd (https://twitter.com/oneeyedcat_ltd)) The 5 Most Common AdWords Fails (& How To Fix Them) "Regardless of how many AdWords accounts I look at, I see the same mistakes being made time and time again. These mistakes often waste a LOT of money and mean the results you get are more expensive than they should be (and there are fewer of them)! The sad part is, some of these mistakes can be fixed quickly and easily if you just know where to look..." Site Review *NEW* We will also be having a brand new 'site review' segment, where we (the audience) will spend 20 mins or so reviewing a website and offering advice on keywords, link building, on-site SEO, etc... The 'volunteered' website will be unveiled on the night.
