Meetup at Halsey Farm on US-58 west of Independence at 10:00 am. Unload boats, set up shuttle to public boat landing at Independence. This is a 14.62 mile float and takes about four hours to complete. Two whitewater areas, Molly Osbourne shoals, class 1-2 depending on water level. Penetentiary Shoals class 2-3 depending on water level. This one can easily be bypassed if water is high and you're not up for it. We've been blessed with plenty of rain in the mountains, and it has extended our paddling season up there. Normally in August, the New is quite low. I'm counting on it being a few inches higher at least this year. If you're camping in the area, and feel up to it, why not do both trips! Almost forgot, there is a $5 boat launch fee for this paddle. Directions from Rock Hill, Charlotte: I-77 north to exit 83 (US-21 North), follow US-21 north through Sparta, and into Va. Cross over the New River and continue for about four miles to Independence. Turn left at the light in Independence onto US-58 West. Halsey Farm is 9.1 miles from Independence on left just before crossing over Fox Creek. Old Farmhouse on the left, white house directly across the road. Park on left at the old farmhouse complex.
