Bioluminescent Paddle

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY...

We will meet at Old Florida Grill at 7:00 sharp for dinner. The address is  (5370 U.S. 1 Cocoa, FL 32927).  The put in is very close by. We will begin launching at 8:15.  If you do NOT plan to join us for dinner meet at the Old Florida Grill and we will all go together.  When you RSVP please indicate if you will be joining us for dinner as I need to make reservations.

Also...Bring/wear water shoes or something with a firm sole as the path to the launch area has some sharp rocks.

Bioluminescence is a form of luminescence, or "cold light" emission by living organisms. Bioluminescence is a form of chemiluminescence where light energy is released by a chemical reaction. Fireflies, anglerfish, and other creatures produce the chemicals luciferin (a pigment) and luciferase (an enzyme). The luciferin reacts with oxygen to create light. The luciferase acts as a catalyst to speed up the reaction, which is sometimes mediated by cofactors such as calcium ions or ATP.

In the warm summer months parts of Florida's intercostal waterways, including the Indian River Lagoon begin to experience this Bioluminescence wonder. Any movement in the water produces light! A swirl of your paddle or a school of bait fish darting past often put on an amazing underwater light show.

The event typically lasts around 2 -3 hrs.

A whistle, PFD (Personal Flotation Device), and glow sticks (one on front and one on back of your kayak) are required. Headlamps and mosquito spray are suggested. You may also want to bring water or another favorite beverage.  :-)

I apologize. My kids dad declined his weekend! I should have let you know this morning. I was especially disapointed bc a Daytona Slacker offered to car pool with me! I was hesitant driving down, as a new member, by myself to Cocoa. Would have been perfect! Next time....
