Florida Paddler's Rendezvous 2016 - Everglades National Park

  • Everglades National Park - Flamingo

  • 2016 Florida Paddlers' Rendezvous

Paddling down as far South as the Mainland Lets You!

Sponsored by The South Florida Bush Paddlers (and Friends including FPTA) and Benefiting the South Florida National Parks Trust

We want to welcome all Florida Paddlers to our home!

Let us show you around. South Florida is FULL of paddling options, some of which are only available here, many of these are located on the east side of Everglades National Park.

The 2016 Rendezvous will be held December 2-4 and will be based out of the Flamingo Campground. We will have a variety of guided scheduled paddles, plenty of opportunities to paddle on your own, and plenty of options beyond paddling.

We will be focusing many of our trips on the unique opportunities that you will find at Everglades National Park. So we will have grass paddles in the largest continuous stand of sawgrass prairie in North America , mangrove paddles in the largest mangrove forest in the Western Hemisphere and bay paddles in Florida Bay. We will have bike rides, (relatively) dry hikes, swamp tromps and slough slogs.

In my experience the areas very close to the ocean are prone to flooding and also the campground farther to the south is very prone to flooding.

Regarding what? How are things there? I wish I was there! Any horseshoe crab sightings? If I had driven there I could've brought my giant screenhouse. Alas I wasn't able to make it.

I'll see you all tomorrow. Look for the pink kayak atop a blue SUV in Loop A. I hope those of us who reserved in this section will be close together. I have my signed Waiver and EventBrite ticket. Can't wait to explore this area of Florida!

I'm wondering how many have signed up and paid $45 the registration fee for this event. The website says that they've reserved the entire group campsite area for us and that's an additional $65 for three nights. Does SLACKERS have a separate campsite? Does anyone have room on their individual site to share? Want to confirm before I sign up and pay.

Hi, Elizabeth, Did you find someone with space at their campsite, yet? We've booked a private campsite a while ago. I see, you've been in touch with Florida Paddlers. Is the $45 fee necessary to enjoy this trip? What does it cover? One of us paid the registration fee, as it covers the car entrance to the park.

I gladly paid the $45 registration fee, even though as a Senior passholder, I'd get free admission to Everglades NP anyway. If you're not in the same car, it might be a problem. It includes all the guided outings, a pig roast, pot luck and beer (can't remember where I saw that.) When you register, you have to sign up for specific events (location and time) so I don't think you can just "sneak in" on the guided outings. When I registered last week, all the initial outings were booked so they added some more and those were filling fast, leading me to believe there are capacity restrictions. So anyone who hasn't yet registered and paid should do so right away. Also, as it's past Thanksgiving, your name might not get on the list for entry into Everglades NP.

I attempted to pick a site to reserve on the map. But when I reserved it I got a message that said a ranger has to assign me a site once I arrive.

It has been brought to my attention that the group site my not be the best and they recommended you get an individual site. I've never been there so I can't say. I did get an individual site just in case. I am keeping the group site so it will be available. Please note that only 4 cars are allowed to park at the site.

Is there any possibility of renting a sit on top there? I don't think so but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Seems like the park is for some reason really into canoes but personally I don't like canoes. That high center of gravity is scary to me. And an aluminum canoe is very very heavy. I haven't figured out yet how to transport a kayak a long distance. Am thinking about it!

    August 28

    • Sam G.

The park may rent kayaks but if you need to rent a kayak we (fellow Slackers) have kayaks for rent ($30 / day)

      August 29

    • robin

Oh if I could rent from the club that would be incredible! I camped at Flamingo the end of Jan this year and they had very little in the line of kayaks to rent. Seems like tandem aluminum canoes were the standard. While we were there a folbot rendezvous group was there. Interesting but I don't know if those boats could take the sharp shells in the gulf. Looked like a lot of them had gotten mangled. (But I don't know how long it took them to get that much wear if it was decades or days.)
