DRY TORTUGAS CAMPING

  • to

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Price: $230.00 /per person

    Refund policy

  • I need 10 people to commit to going on this trips. The cost will be around $230.00 per person.

All Fees must be paid by 12/1/16 or I will open up the trip to people on the waiting list

This will include the Ferry, park admission, camping fees and kayak fees. We will only be able to take 3 kayaks out with us - so we will have to share. Kayaks are limited to between 12' - 15'.

Camping in the Dry Tortugas National Park is definitely an experience of a lifetime! Imagine sleeping under the stars, on an island 70 miles from civilization, with the warm tropical breezes blowing through palm trees and the rhythmic sound of the ocean waves playing in the background.

Upon boarding at 6:30 am from Key West, you will enjoy a continental breakfast of fresh fruit, freshly baked bagels, doughnuts, cereal, orange juice, and coffee.

En route to Dry Tortugas National Park our onboard naturalist will give you an orientation about the area and the national park’s surroundings. During your voyage to one of America’s most remote National Parks, you will enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Marquesa Islands, Boca Grande, and frequent turtle and dolphin sightings.

Campers must have all gear on the dock (NOT left in camping area) by 10:30AM on the day of departure from Ft. Jefferson to load on the boat. Equipment must be packed and cleaned of sand before re-boarding. Please keep with you items you will need for the day, as the boat may be off the dock for much of the day.

You can travel inside the main cabin in air-conditioned comfort or outside on one of the observation decks. The Yankee Freedom III also features comfortable cushioned seats, three restrooms, fresh water rinse shower, full galley serving snacks, soft drinks, beer, wine, mixed drinks (on return trips only), film, and souvenirs. You will reach the National Park boundaries within 2 hours and 10 minutes after leaving Key West harbor.

I reserved a nonrefundable room in Palms Hotel the day before (March 1). That was just with a double bed. But if anyone is interested and want to sleep on the floor or maybe a cot?, I could check into how much more it would cost to add more people to the room. I had tried to make a reservation after the trip in a campground Boyd's but never received any confirmation or response of any kind. Don't know what is going on with them. It looks like a nice place to camp as far as anyone can tell from a web site.

After I get the final group, i will work on options for places to stay

    November 23

  • Fawn

I'm already booked in a little guesthouse. They normally require a 3-day minimum, but they messed up my reservation last time and were kind enough to break the rule. So my big worry is getting my gear to the boat so early. Any way I'll be able to drop it to somebody the night before?

    November 23

  • Jan G

I'm Paid. Sorry to be late. Any plans to coordinate places to stay the night before and after?

    1 · November 23

  • Sam G.

All Fees must be paid by 12/1/16 or I will open up the trip to people on the waiting list.

We still have two people who have not paid for this trip. (Jan and Sophia). They need to pay by 12/1/16 so that we can finalize this trip.

There are no inexpensive places in Key West. There are some merely expensive ( VS ridiculous) places on the other side of the island, but not so bad is 2-4 are in a room. It is a small island and cab fares are reasonable. Been there many times and I love the island. I'd love to share a room with someone to save costs and see if anyone else wants to carpool or do the Key West Express. call or message me at[masked]

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to stay the night before and the night after. Please post suggestions

I would like to know where to stay also if anyone has any affordable ideas.

Don't they have the coolers st the campsites anymore???when I was there 11/2 yrs ago the site came with a huge hard plastic cooler

Maybe they do. I found an article from this year that says that. http://currentlywande...

  • Paul H.

I am going to cancel. Just got off the phone with the ferry people and I cannot bring the raft. Started talking about PFD'S and whistles??? I should have asked for forgiveness instead of permission. Sorry.

    November 11

    • robin

Well I can loan you a pfd and whistle.

      November 11

    • Hiker E.

Sorry to hear that you are cancelling Paul. Just three more cancel and my wife and I get to go.....

      November 11

  • Paul H.

Thanks, but they came up with a different reason each time. I have PFD'S and whistles. Looking into a barebones charter out of Ft Meyers. Really not that much more money and not the logistical problems (plus you get to sleep in a bed). Thanks.

    Hi, Robin
Once again, check out the camping section in Walmart. They have a folding sterno stove that heats right up. Stanley makes a nesting stainless steel cookset for $15 that will last a life time. Starbucks makes little packets of coffee. They are perfect for popping in your purse or kayak!

    November 11

    • robin

Yeah I'll get a sterno stove. (I always used propane but they don't like propane on the boat.) I have a lightweight pan already. As long as I have my coffee (and I'll get some more on the boat when it comes) I should be good!

      November 11

  • Denise

    Robin,

I have a small tent you can use if you'd like. It's described as a 2-person but you'd have to be VERY friendly. It is lightweight, primarily for backpacking.

    November 11

    • robin

Well thank you! I think I will get a backpacking tent for this and future kayak adventures. It should work if it's warm. The problem in cold climates is people get too stiff to be able to crawl around in a small tent. Northern Michigan is great if you can ever get up after sleeping in the cold :-)

      November 11

  • Paul H.

Robin, they have men's and women's dorms. 2 gallons of water and a fifth of vodka and the 60 lbs is a third gone.

    November 10

    • robin

thanks your experience is invaluable! I still could use a tent that weighs less though. Please keep those tips coming. What would you recommend for coffee addicts? If there's one thing I don't deal well with it's not having hot water for my instant coffee.

      November 10

    • Sam G.

We have access to water and will be able to boil it. Also when the ferry comes you can get coffee on the ferry.

      1 · November 11

  • robin

A couple questions, do we have to bring our water or can we get water/drinks from somewhere on the island or from some boat? (Not what usually happens apparently so I am hoping we are special :-)
    "Campers
must provide for all of their basic needs, including
food, water, shelter, medication, and other essentials.
Composting toilets are available, but all trash and
garbage must be packed out. There are no showers. "

Is there trip parking at the ferry? I checked the web site and it doesn't address that issue
    https://www.drytortugas.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/campinginfo.pdf
    "The only
way to protect your food and prevent damage to your
gear (rats will chew through tents and backpacks if
they smell food) is to store your food in hard-sided
containers or hang it from the posts provided."

Good news there are carts to take stuff to and from the camping area. I hope I don't sound like a whiner I just like to scope out the details ahead of time.

    November 10

    • Fawn

This is going to be the best trip. I LOVE that place.

You have to bring food water and all the goods. Toilets are open on the boat when it is there, otherwise, composting toilets that are not near as bad as you'd think.

There ARE showers -- at the back of the boat when it is in. You will be showering out in the open, so in your bathing suit.

Parking is about a block away in a city lot.

It sounds like this is a much more intensive ordeal than it is. It was actually a breeze. Boat picks us up, takes us there, feeds us. There are great carts to get our stuff to the camping area. I did not see the first rat, but did have a good cooler and container for my food.

It was much easier getting the gear unloaded and to the site than going to Cumberland Island. And the Dry Tortugas are really spectacular.

      2 · November 10

    • robin

Thanks for the info. Maybe I can find an aluminum food container.

      November 10

  • Paul H.

Ken, I booked a bunk at the Seashell Hostel. Dorm situation
$55 tho. Ferry limits you to 60 lbs for gear and suppies. I am negotiating with them now to see if I can bring my inflatable dingy. They are difficult to work with....

    November 10

    • Fawn

Actually, I love the people at the ferry. They were so helpful when we went last time and I have really loved working with them for a trip I am doing there in a couple of weeks. Be patient. They have hundreds of people every day, but that crew makes it happen. Five stars.

I'm for paying a little more and renting Tamdems

    November 8

  • Fawn

Sam, if we bring a tandem or two, there is more kayaking to be had. I am happy to offer up one or two of my tandems, but I can't bring it down because I plan to take the ferry. We rented two tandems last time from the guy who outfits the Dry Tortugas. It was expensive, but it meant we all had options. Thoughts?

    November 7

    • Sam G.

I hope to get people to bring free kayaks / if no volunteer then we will look at alternatives. Thanks for the suggestion

      November 7

    • Fawn

Happy to send my tandems if someone will haul them down.

      November 7

I have a hard bottom inflatable raft that would be perfect for snorkeling. It has oars or I can bring a 2 hp honda. Please advise. Thanks.
