A conversation: are social media compatible with Humanist ideals?
Social media can bring people together but it can also be harmful. Jeff and Stells will share their thoughts on whether social media, on balance, does more harm than good. Stells is a frequent enthusiastic user and defender of social media while Jeff has a number of misgivings. Each will have a few minutes to outline their position followed by conversation, audience Q&A and comment. Jeffrey is a retired American trial lawyer who has lived in London and been a member of CLHG since 2008. Jeff earned two university degrees in physics before attending law school. As a trial attorney, Jeff frequently presented expert witness testimony concerning scientific, medical and engineering subjects to lay juries. He especially enjoyed exposing “junk science” propounded by unscrupulous expert witnesses. Since retiring and moving to London, Jeff has spent his leisure time pursuing all the scientific and philosophical questions he never had time to study while working. Stells Dessoy is a member of Central London Humanists and has acted as a committee member helping to organise talks for some years. Doors open at 6.30 pm aiming to start the talk at 7pm. Please arrive early to enjoy conversation and a drink from our wine bar, the profits from which will go to Jeff's chosen charity: Crisis (https://www.crisis.org.uk/). We request £3 at the door, or if you prefer you can pay online on our PayPal link: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ZWCNRJ25BDL96 Thanks, and hope to see you soon! We encourage dialogue, debate, and sharing of information, but ask people to keep their comments cordial. Any individual's views expressed in the comments below do not necessarily reflect the views of the group.

What we're about

Welcome to the Central London Humanist Group!

The CLHG provides a meeting place for Humanists, the secular and other non religious people, particularly those who live or work in the Central London area.

Every month we hold a talk/lecture and several social events. Our social activities include group socials, a book group, picnics, walks, museum & cultural visits and theatre trips.

If you're not religious and would like to meet like minded people, please join us.

As we don't have a membership fee a donation of £3 is suggested at each meetup. This goes towards our running costs, partnership fees and charitable donations. If it's your first time we don't expect a donation.

We are a partner group of Humanists UK (http://www.humanism.org.uk)
We are an Associate Member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union
We are Consultative Members of the European Humanist Federation (http://www.iheu.org)

We're also on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/centrallondonhumanists) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/LondonHumanists/). Some of our previous talks are available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/LondonHumanistGroup).

Anyone who joins us on Meetup can participate fully in events. They can suggest events, participate in organising events and much more.

As we are such a large group, each year we hold an AGM and elect a committee to help manage the group. To be a voting member of the Central London Humanists or be a member of the committee, you must be a paid up member of Humanists UK (to join go here (https://www.humanism.org.uk/join)).
